Terry and I just got back from a week in Salt Cay. Where the heck is Salt Cay? Is a small, 3 square mile island part of the Turks & Caicos, which are located between Bahamas and Puerto Rico. It's a great place to get away from the world. It literally is as its billed "The Land that Time Forgot". There are about 12 trucks, 3 cars, 21 golf carts, and lots of wild donkeys, cows, bulls and horses all over. There are no traffic lights and not really any paved roads either. The main attraction is either diving or solitude.
I hooked up with an outfit (the only outfit) called Salt cay divers. Debbie was my main contact, all through email. She took care of the interisland flights, hotel reservations and diving. She pretty much ran the place. We dove mostly with Mike. Ollie did one dive with us, and Debbie got in the water for a pair of dives at the end of the week. We were supposed to do at least 5 days of 3 tank diving, then 2 tanks the last day. With hurricane Michelle in the area, we got a mid-week break and could not dive the middle 2 days. I only got 12 dives in for the week. The diving was good, but I wouldn't say exceptional. This was mostly due to the weather, but what can I say? I can't say it was better than it was if I didn't experience it. We did see an eagle ray the last dive, some sharks, and a few turtles.
Food on the island was very interesting. At one point, there were about 6 or 7 places to eat. All supposed to be pretty good. During our week, it was mainly 3 places: Island Thyme (owner Porter), Pats Place (but Pat was off-island) and Mount Pleasant (owner is now Teddy). We ended up eating most of our meals at Porters due to the choices of food and the general feeling there. The dinners we had a Pats place and Teddys consisted of mainly some steamed fish with a few side dishes. Nothing fancy, nothing that delicious. At Porters, we had coconut french toast, eggs with things, lots of conch. Fritters, spiced, cracked. The conch was prepared by an island local, Maria. Awesome job! Lunch was usually broiled fish with fries. Or burgers. Everything was excellent.
Enough jabbering already, let's see the pictures DK.....
