Here's A little something that we did in my class as a lesson... A lesson on slang! It was funny listening to my students use slang, I just wish I had tape recorded them like Tomio did in Campo Grande! Oh well, next time.


Slang Dictionary

Back in the Day - Referring to a long time ago. Ex.- "We used to do that back in the day." Direct translation, "We used to do that a long time ago."

Baller - A common word used to describe a person that is very dedicated and skilled in the sport of basketball. Ex.- "Darren and Garrett are ballers."

Bite - To bite means to copy. Usually referring to someones clothing, image, or style. Ex.- "You better not bite my style!" or, if someone buys the same shoes as you did yesterday then that person bit your shoes.

Bomb - A word meaning good, or awesome. It came from the phrase, "the bomb", but slowly evolved to one adjective. Another common use is "da bomb", with da meaning the. Ex.- "Your mom's cookin is bomb!" or "That new CD is da bomb! Put great emphasis on the word bomb when using it in a sentence.

Coo (or cool)- see bomb

Chillin'-relaxing Ex.-"Me and my friends were chillin’at the pool on our day off."

Crash- When you are very tired and fall asleep. "After Dan finishes his 20 page paper, he’s gonna crash."

Crib- house. Ex.- "Let's go to my pad and chill."

Dawg- Usually used in greetings. Only commonly used between males. Ex.-"Sup' Dawg!"

Dis - When you disrespect someone or make them look or feel stupid. Ex.-"Man, you just got dissed by that girl!"

Dope- A word meaning good, excellent or impressive. Ex.- "That song was dope!"

Dude- a word similar to "hey", used to get someone’s attention. Ex.-"Dude, check out that dope ride!"

Flava - Meaning "style". "Fley-va". Your style or flava can be applied to all of your talents or everything that you do. Ex.- "He's got cool flava." This would be a compliment. Goes well with mad.

Fly- Describing an attractive male or female. Ex.-"That girl over there is fly."

Freebird- a person who is very crazy and is willing to do anything, anywhere without worrying about what others might think of them. Ex.- "Newt would do anything, he’s such a freebird."

Funky- A word used to describe something that is strange or not good in general. Ex.-"Man, Mike’s cooking is funky!"

Game- A word to emphasize a particular skill you have. Say you are a good cook. You got game in the kitchen.

Ghetto- A word used to describe something or someone that is below your or your peers personal standards. Or if you just don't like something or someone, you would call them or it ghetto. Ex.- "That haircut is ghetto!"

Hang- when people get together to do nothing in particular or to do some sort of leisure activity. Ex- "We’re gonna go hang at the Care Bears house."

Hecka- A word meaning a lot. Only commonly used in Northern California. Ex.- "Jeff brought hecka candy to Brazil!"

Jacked up- meaning not fair or referring to something that is badly broken. Ex- "That call by the referee was way jacked up." "Check out that chair, it’s way jacked up!'

Kickin it - See chillin

Loaded- Describing one who is rich in financial terms. Ex.- "That guy with five cars is totally loaded."

Mack- A popular male or female among the opposite sex. Ex.- "John is the mack"

Mad - A word commonly used, meaning "very". Ex.- "That guy is a mad baller!" The word mad must be carefully used because sometimes it doesn't fit. Ex.- "That car was mad fast."

O.G.- meaning original. The word first derived from the phrase "original gangster" Ex.- "L.L. Cool J. is an O.G. rapper."

Old Skool- use this word whenever referring to things of the past. Trends, memories, fads, or anything. Ex.- "Those Adidas super star shoes are straight up old skool!"

Pad- see crib

Phat- similar to dope. Ex.- "Man, those shoes are phat!" Great emphasis is placed on the ph while saying this word.

Played- When a person gets used by someone else in a personal relationship or in any circumstance. Being taken advantage of. Ex.-"Man, your girl is playin ya." Variation- "Being "played" the fool."

Played Out- A phrase that describes something that is old or over used. Something that is out of style. Ex.- "The Backstreet Boys are played out!"

Regulate- A term used when you were wronged by somebody and are going to get even with them. Ex. "Man, let’s regulate those fools."

Ride- A car, truck, motorcycle, or any other form of transportation. Commonly used with dope. Ex.- "Check out that Porsche, that’s a dope ride."

Schooled- A word that people will say when they are embarressed due to their lack of skills. Meaning "taught", like, if I school you, then, I'm showing you how it's done. Ex- "Oh man, I just got schooled!" Commonly used in basketball.

Skillz- Your skillz are basically your skills. If you are a good basketball player, then you got mad ballin skillz Ex.- "You've got skillz" Goes good with mad. "Mad skillz!"

Throw Down- To begin to fight or brawl. Ex "Those guys from Palmeiras and Corinthians look like they’re gonna throw down!"

Tight- a synonym of phat or dope. Ex.-"Yo man, that basketball game was tight!"

Trip or trippin- A common word. Meaning over reacting or acting unusual. Ex. -"My mom is trippin cuz I came home late." or, "Don't trip! I was just messin around!"

Whack- A word that must be used selectively. Meaning not good, stupid, or unappealing to the general taste. Ex.-"Garth Brooks is whack!"

What’s up (or wassup)- A common greeting. Ex-"Hey bro, wassup!"
