Here are some of the games that I played with my
students! The names are kinda funky, (cause I couldn't
think of good names for some!) but the ideas are alright
(I think!). Some of these are duplicated from the
Beginning/Intermediate student game list... But you can
easily make it applicable by making the questions or words
more difficult.
Bible Drama: Take a well known Bible passage, such as
Jesus feeding the 5000 or Adam and Eve, and have the students
read the passage in English and act it out.
Describe Me: Have them pair up and they report back to the
group, describing characteristics of the person they
just met. You can also do this by showing them magazine
pictures and having them describe as much as they can.
Guesstures: Have students act out a word or action. Good for
verb review, it's also a good game to play in teams.
It's hilarious, to say the least!
Magazine Review: Bring down some American magazines
and pick out short articles. The students must read the
article and report back on what they read.
Mock Interviews: A game for more advanced students.
You can teach them about American business and interview
etiquette while conducting mock interviews for a job.
Find some interview questions here.
People Bingo: Draw up a grid with different questions
in each, such as Find someone who "will do 10 jumping
jacks" or "has a birthday in the same month as you."
The students ask each other and the first to have a row
of signed boxes wins. It's always fun to verify the
answers and make those who signed actually do the task or
answer the question that's listed!
Personal Habits: Go around and have everyone place themself
between two extremes of a personal habit. Then they
must explain why they placed themselves where they did.
Take a look at the game and it'll
make more sense to you!
Round Story: One of my all time favorites. Go around
the room and make a story with each person adding another
line to the story. This one can get pretty crazy... Just
read the story that my
7:00 class wrote...
Singing! This might be rather obvious, but people
find it easy to learn music! I found that my advanced and
intermediate students really loved to sing English praise
songs. What a good way to teach English and the Gospel
at the same time!
Student Presentations: Have each student prepare a
short lesson in English about something they like to
talk about or something related to Brazilian culture. My
students spoke on topics like holidays in Brazil, soccer,
geography, and many things I didn't know about!
Who Am I?: Write on slips of paper the names of famous
Brazilian people (i.e. Pele, Fernando Henrique Cardoso,
Ronaldo, Xuxa, etc) or renowned world figures (Bill Clinton,
Michael Jordan, etc) and tape them to everyone's back. They
must go around asking others yes or no questions to figure
out their identity.
