On the northeastern part of Italy there is a valley, Val Canale,
that for centuries has been a point of intersection between three of the most
important cultures of our continent: the Latin, the German and the Slavic.
I was there on summer 1996 and, with the aid of my mountainbike, I toured many
old 1st World War's military paths in Italy, Austria and Slovenia.
Here is a selection of some of the picture I made during my MTB trips in this
'Land of the Three Borders'
The path that from the uppers of Ugovizza (Italy) leads to the Achomitzer Alm (Austria), which passes through beautiful pastures and farms. |
The Achomitzer Alm (Austria), located very close to the borderline, on the higher path of the "Alpi Carniche", that covers all the mountain divide between Austria and Italy. |
Charming mountain houses in Val Bartolo, a narrow valley that from Tarvisio goes north up to the mountain divide. |
The scenic lake Predil,
on the Julian Alps, located a few miles before the Predil Pass, border crossing between Italy and Slovenia |
The fantastic unpaved road that climbs up to the Mount Mangart, in Slovenia. |
