Scuba Explorer Post 2978 Activities
This is the best part.
The best part about being in this post is the activities -- and some of them have been really super!
In 1994 and 1995 the post did two great dive trips to the Catalina Islands off the California Coast. We were on a dive boat for 2 days and nights, and did lost of diving including a night dive
Our 1996 trip was the the Florida Keys. We flew into Orlando and traveled down to the Keys in a van for several days. Then came back up to dive the caves at Ginnie Springs and the Living Seas display in the Epcot Center
Later that same year we did another trip down to Havasupai in Arizona. It's a cool place with huge waterfalls and beautiful light blue water. You hike down a canyon to get to the little town, then go a little further to the waterfalls and campground. We stayed several days and then hiked back out, but everyone wished we could have stayed longer.
In 1997 we again flew to Orlando, but then continued on to Nassau, Bahamas. We spent a week diving coral reefs, walls and some wrecks around the island in spectacular clear blue water.
The 1998 summer trip was to Cozumel, Mexico, an island by the Yucatan Peninsula. We had a week of spectacular diving along with the excitment of being in Mexico with it's culture, food and sights.
In October 1998 we went once again to the Catalina Islands off the coast from Los Angeles. This was an extra trip that we added for some new members who joined us the end of the summer. The trip was similar to earlier ones to Catalina except we were on a different boat, the Bottom Scratcher. One of our leaders took an underwater camera and we took some pictures on the trip. They are posted on our other web page.
Because we travel in a group and begin planning far in advance, we have been able to arrange for each of these trips at unusually low cost. Even our most expensive trip as been under $1,000 per person, including airfare, lodging, meals and diving.
Sometimes the post has held fund raisers to help boys earn the money for these trips. But most who can get part times jobs have found it profitiable to earn the money on their own. Either way, the key is to begin planning well in advance. Boys who want to participate in next summer's super activity should get certified early, get experience doing a few local dives with the post, begin saving money and help us make plans for the next big trip.
