What is a Venturing Crew?

Venturing is a fairly new program created by BSA. Explorer Posts that have an activity emphasis or are sponsored by churches have now become Venturing Crews. Those that have a career emphasis will remain Explorer Posts.

Our High Adventure Crew runs very much like any other post or crew, except that we have selected a specialty for our program. There are posts and crews with many different specialties, such as medical, law enforcement, ham radio, search and rescue posts and many others.

Our crew has selected high adventure with special emphasis on scuba diving because it they are unique activities best done with groups, rather than as individual sports. Our crew functions very much like a scuba or high adventure club, except that we have the organization and support of Scouting.

As a member you will learn new skills, have great experiences, and gain opportunities for service and leadership. While scout advancement is not emphasized, you can continue to work toward Eagle if you choose (until you turn 18).

Who Can Join?

Any boys age 14 and up, who has completed the 8th grade, is elegible to join Crew 2978. You can be registered in two units at the same time. For instance, if you are already in a Varsity Scout team or Explorer Post or Crew in your church (as is common in our area) you can also register and particiapte as a member of Crew 2978.

How Much Does It Cost?

Because of the kind of crew that we are, we do things that many other Explorers or Varsity Scouts don't. Some of these activities cost more than others.

For instance, scuba diving is a complicated sport, and requires a certification course for full participation. These courses can cost anywhere from about $175 to over $300. Our crew has consistently been able to make agreements with local instructors to provide the same courses for our members at substantial savings. Most new divers rent gear for trips, which costs less than a lift ticket at a ski area.
