Lake Kenyir has been identified as a major potential for freshwater fish production, particularly for aqualture activities. Therefore, inculcating the public on the right attitude towards the importance of nature conservation and releasing unwanted fish back into the lake, and taking what is necessary only, is a long and ardous task. The fact that fish protein is a staple food especially amonst rural folks and is a livelihood for fishermen, makes it even more difficult to instill the awareness of the importance of nature conservation.
Unless public awareness and cooperation is established, stringent regulations are difficult to enforce in this vast dendritic lake. Public ignorance of nature conservation will be difficult to overcome in a short period of time. However, there is now a growing awareness for nature conservation, but it will be still a long way for us to achieve what the west have accomplished in the restoration of nature conservation. The public should play its role to ensure that the rich fisheries heritage of Lake Kenyir is preserved, and not just remain as vivid memories, for the sake of the future generation.
