--KOALA, is located beside this beautiful crater lake in rural western Mexico, near Tepic, Nayarit, within a few hours by car from Puerto Vallarta and San Blas on the Pacific coast, and Guadalajara in the altiplano.
Accommodation is provided by a number of bungalows and rooms that sit among orchards and gardens that slope gently down to the lake's edge and are planted with bananas, avocados, mangos, oranges, palm trees, and many flowering shrubs such as hibiscus, jasmin and bougainvillaea. Most bungalows have a single bedroom with two double beds, and some have two bedrooms. There is hot and cold water and showers. All have a small kitchen with cooking facilities. There are 12 grassy R.V. sites with hookups, and plenty of room for campers near the lake's edge, good rest rooms, laundry and a snack bar.

La
Laguna, an unspoiled crater lake about 2km
in diameter, 52m deep and at an altitude of 758m, is surrounded by steep
forested mountains that rise 300m above the lake.Winter weather is normally
sunny and dry, with temperatures more moderate than the coast. This area is off
the beaten path and abounds wildflowers, birds and butterflies. There is easy walking around the
lake and more challenging hiking in the surrounding mountains. Excursions can
be made from the lake to visit Huichol villages where original yarnpaintings may be
purchased. An experienced tourguide
will be glad to take you to places of interest in Nayarit and nearby states.
Activities: The lake is ideally suited for kayaking, swimming, windsurfing and fishing for black bass and perch. Hiking and biking is also popular. Kayaks and rowboats are available for rent. The area surrounding Santa Maria lake has been described by many visitors as a bird watchers paradise. A comprehensive bird list is available.

Restaurant-bar 'La Mojarra de SAMAO' offers
both national and international cuisine plus a variety of nourishing snacks,
fruit juices and coffee. We have a small shop selling basic foodstuffs and
