This is where I'll be listing the games that I enjoy playing. There will be links to many web pages here for you to have a look at. As time progresses, I will be giving some comments about the various games listed here. Dont worry if your favourite games not listed here, Ill concider adding them if you drop me an email.
NetHack (Spoilers follow)
To download the game, go to the NetHack website and download from the
downloads page at www.nethack.org. There are mirrors of the sources and binaries available to reduce the load on our server. See the following web page for a current list of mirrors: www.nethack.org/common/links.html#mirror
From the readme.pc file that comes with the program...
Throughout this document, the word NetHack refers to a rather jolly game involving a small -sign getting its face et by dragons, and is in no way to be construed as relating to the theory or practise of gaining unauthorized use of or access to data or data processing equipment (except maybe if a few of us play the game at work, something which I want to go on record as saying is very, very naughty indeed and not the sort of thing you want to get involved with at all), and if any security-establishment types are reading this, remember its YOU folks who do the cloak-and-dagger stuff, were responsible professionals with real jobs and self respect and stuff like that.
Secondly, all references to animal sacrifice, Donny Osmond, dynamic linking, Microsoft Corporation, okapi, claviprondrophony and so forth are made purely for the entertainment of the reader and if you think we meant something by it, thats your problem. Research has shown that what people say and what they mean have so little to do with each other that you can actually get PAID to figure out why people say, can you reach the salt? when as a matter of fact they dont give a pair of dingos kidneys what the answer to the question is, so long as someone provides them with some small white crystals in the near future and look! you came up with *that* interpretation all by yourself now didnt you.
Right. Now if you visit the newsgroup rec.games.roguelike.nethack , youll meet up with many people who play the game. Some boast being able to master new versions in a matter of days, while others are total newbies.
There are many versions of the game and it can be played on many different operating systems. The official web site for NetHack is www.nethack.org the latest version is 3.3.1 which is Y2K compliant. There have been some recent bug fixes for Win2000 and WinXP.
BUT WHAT IS NETHACK? (Shamelessly copied from the nethack.org web page)
NetHack is a single player dungeon exploration game that runs on a wide variety of computer systems, with a variety of graphical and text interfaces all using the same game engine. Unlike many other Dungeons & Dragons-inspired games, the emphasis in NetHack is on discovering the detail of the dungeon and not simply killing everything in sight - in fact, killing everything in sight is a good way to die quickly. Each game presents a different landscape - the random number generator provides an essentially unlimited number of variations of the dungeon and its denizens to be discovered by the player in one of a number of characters: you can pick your race, your role, and your gender.
And before any one says anything else, yep, Im talking about plain old vanilla NetHack...
- Top Level (DL 1)
- Entrance to Gnomish Mines (DL 2 to DL 4)
- Oracle (DL 5 to DL 9)
- Entrance to Sokoban (DL 6 to DL 10, always oracle+1)
- Big Room (DL 10 to DL 12, 40% chance)
- The Quest (DL 11 to DL 16)
- Rogue Level (DL 15 to DL 18)
- Fort Ludios (DL 11 to DL 27, not guaranteed)
- Medusas Island (2nd to 5th level from bottom, DL 21 to DL 28)
- The Castle (Bottom level, DL 25 to DL 29)
- Entrance to Gehennom (below the Castle)
- Well, Vlads is between the 9th and 13th levels of Gehennom. The VotD is part of Gehennom, so that narrows it down a bit for you. If the Valley is level 26, you need to look between levels 35 and 39..
