This light was built in 1808. It was Cape Cod's second lighthouse.
To help mariners, the Coast Guard made "twin lights" here, so mariners would not confuse it with Highland Light, to the north.
In 1923, the north tower at Chatham was moved to Nauset, making Chatham a one light station.
The tower that stands today was built in 1875, electrified in 1939, houses an aerobeacon and was automated in 1982.
If you get a chance to visit this light, you can only look from over a fence. The property is owned and used by the Coast Guard. |
