    Home                Days 4-5          Walking

Mallorca....30 March to 5 April, 2001

A place where the sky fuses with the sea

Yes! The class was in Mallorca for a fieldtrip (poor Alison and Jane, who have to 'baby-sit' 14 of us, but we were good, right??).
The trip started with an extremely early flight and all of us were still in our dreamland when we touched down at Palma International.  The first day was left to us to explore Magaluf, where we are based for the trip. The weather was fantastic in Mallorca (the direct opposite of the infamous British weather!) and we are all geared up in shorts and T-shirts (we could finally leave the coats at home!)...yippee!!

My flatmates for the trip...from left, Erica, Ann, Junko, and Me! This picture
was taken while the others are having their siestas....ZzzzZZ....

First impression of Mallorca....very touristy and especially British in Magaluf, where one will easily hit a pub (with football telecasts) or fish and chips cafe every 5 footsteps....and lots of duty-free shops with extremely cheap alcohol.
And it's Junko's turn to flaunt her cookery skills, and none is more appropriate than cooking Spanish Omelette....in Spain, of course!

Junko and her omelette!

And apparently, our day finished with a noisy neighbour of ours by the name of 'John'. I was deep in my dreams and missed the interesting conversation, but poor Erica and Junko were 'forced' out of their beauty sleeps....

Day 2...Peguera

This is a serious day....we had to do work on Magaluf and Peguera....and do a mini presentation in the evening....

Two groups in Peguera, doing the research leisurely (we are on holidays also, right?)

Anyway, Peguera is everything of Magaluf, except that it's German instead of British, and in a smaller scale....
Ann and I tasted the best paella here in Peguera, the risotto was cooked in perfection and we lunched by the beautiful sea front.....

Day 3..Caves of Drach and the Marina

Maybe my flatmates and I are too excited to see the Caves of Drach, because we overslept!! The coach was at 8:30am and we woke up at 8:20am, and needless to say, we were in a daze and had to get ready in 10 minutes' time....
The bus trip to the Caves was terrible...I felt giddy after 30 minutes and dying to get out of the coach.....finally, after 1 hour, we were 'let out' of the vehicle to visit a pearl factory. As it was a Sunday, there wasn't many people working, but just a person for a whole conveyor belt....what a show!

But all the sufferings are worthwhile...
The Caves of Drach are underground limestone caves with millions of formations...but the highlight of the tour was the musical performance on the underground lake....brilliant and breathless!! The only lights in the caves came from three boats rowing across the lake while the music was playing from one of them....
But photography was prohibited in the caves, so those who've not been there, please imagine.....

The Marina in the afternoon was completely different from the caves....it's the place for the rich and famous, and not surprising, there were countless yachts.....

Anyway, the Marina was a nice place to pretend rich and famous...just walk into the shops, look around, and act as if you are not disturbed by the prices of shoes and dresses.
And the girls escaped yet another scheduled 'bread day', since I was supposed to 'cook' on Saturday (but the supermarket was closed), and was postponed to today...but Aldi was closed! Don't worry, my dear flatmates, 'bread day' is tomorrow!! HHaahhaaa....
