Racquetball!!!

Racquetball. . . The greatest sport in the world! There’s a lot of good things about playing racquetball. It’s one of the best aerobic sports and it’s fun at the same time. Just run around like crazy. . .

But stop when you see a wall, it’s easy to play . . . no nets, no out of bounds, just hit the ball so it hits the front wall. Equipment is relatively cheap and you can play almost anytime . . . rain or shine. Raining outside? Go play Racquetball.

The Rules

Racquetball is played by two or four players. When played by two, it is called singles and when played by four, doubles. A non-tournament variation of the game that is played by three players is called cut-throat.

Description - Racquetball is a competitive game in which a strung racquet is used to serve and return the ball.

Objective - The objective is to win each rally by serving or returning the ball so the opponent is unable to keep the ball in play. A rally is over when a player (or team in doubles) is unable to hit the ball before it touches the floor twice, is unable to return the ball in such a manner that it touches the front wall before it touches the floor, or when a hinder is called.


Court and Equipment

The racquet, including bumper guard and all solid parts of the handle, may not exceed 22 inches in length.

The racquet frame may be any material judged to be safe.

The racquet frame must include a cord that must be securely attached to the player's wrist.

The string of the racquet must be gut, monofilament, nylon, graphite, plastic, metal, or a combination thereof, and must not mark or deface the ball.

Using an illegal racquet will result in forfeiture of the game in progress or, if discovered between games, forfeiture of the preceding game.


Apparel

All players must wear lensed eyewear designed for use in racquetball This rule applies to all persons, including those who wear corrective lenses.


Choosing the Right Partner for You

Because racquetball is an individual sport, players often forget the team concept when it comes to doubles. However, talk to any successful doubles team, and they will talk about synergy. No, they might not actually use the word "synergy" but they are referring to a feeling of positive energy between them when they play their best. Great doubles teams are not necessarily made up of the best singles players, but rather, two people who are able to bring out each other's strengths and have a great time playing together.

So, how do you go about finding the right partner? We recommend finding someone with whose game you are familiar. Good choices are people that you may have played against several times in leagues or tournaments, and have had intense but fair matches. Choosing someone with whose game you are familiar accomplishes several goals. First, you will know if you enjoy being on the court with him/her Second, you will have already established some familiarity. it is essential to know your partner's tendencies in timing and shot selection). Third, it will enhance your confidence in the team (a critical ingredient between doubles teams.) You have to feel confident in your partner's ability to do his job on the court. What makes a great team is when each partner knows what pushes the other's buttons in the right way. Experiment and know when to be encouraging and when to be a little more harsh in order to get your partner to play his or her best. Most successful teams have a "quarterback," the person who calls for shots "mine," "yours") and is more vocal about strategy
