In 1884 on August 7 we were incorporated as a town with the first Mayor
being George Murdock The population was 1000
1885-1894- The town hall, market place and fire hall were built at a
combined cost of $1,694.00 A Fire brigade was organised. Sir Hector
Langivan petitions for a Bridge across the Bow. So we have the Langivan
Bridge. A site for a cemetery was selected.
Council offers to lease land to the CPR for stockyards on a two year
lease. Wells were sunk for fire protection and water tanks of 30,000
capacity were built.
We get telephones and electric light. Town council offers Peter Prince
the job of building the bridge over the Bow on the east side of town.
Government Bridge is built. Land is set aside for the Bow River Parks
and the Calgary to Edmonton rail line is started.
1894-1904- Town incorporated as" The City of Calgary" on January 1,1894
we even appointed consul for Norway and Sweden. The Klondike Gold rush
started and the Bridge over the Elbow was built at a cost of $1,240.00
The CPR located it's Repair shops in Calgary. City hall gave them a
bonus of $25,000.00 for locating here
