This is a guide to family accommodation and places to see in Western Australia. Anyone who knows Western Australia knows that it is huge, roughly 3500kms from north to south and 1300kms from west to east. These are some of the places we have stayed in. The star ratings are ours to give an indication of how much we enjoyed each place.
AUGUSTA
AUGUSTA HOTEL We stayed in a self contained motel room for three nights. It was old and in need of some refurbishment but was comfortable and clean. The view was magnificent. The hotel is ideally situated in the middle of town (walking distance to everything in town centre and to river). The meals they serve in the lounge bar are wonderful and reasonably priced!
DWELLINGUP
DWELLINGUP FOREST LODGE Hidden in the forest, just 5kms from Dwellingup. Four duplex chalets overlook a large dam which is suitable for swimming. Canoes and paddle bikes are provided for extra fun on the water. It is OK to bring your pet dog with you as long as it is well behaved, and gets on with people and other dogs. The chalets are air-conditioned (Dwellingup gets hot in summer!), are either one or two bedroom, and are very comfortably furnished, with good sized fridge, microwave, TV, video, CD player, etc. There is a fairly large gas barbecue on the lawn in front of the chalets. Everything is provided (including linen). All you need to bring is your food and clothing. There is also a laundry and a games room. Contact: Telephone (08)9538 0333 or email dwell@accessin.com.au
A wonderful little town 320km south west of Perth, at the mouth of the Blackwood River. Just 9km south of Augusta is Cape Leeuwin, the south west tip of Australia "where two oceans meet" (the Indian and the Southern). The combination of river, two oceans and the relaxed lifestyle of a small Australian country town make this the ideal destination for a relaxing or adventurous holiday for all ages. History abounds in Augusta and the museum, run by the Augusta Historical Society, is one of the best we've seen if you're looking for local history.
Whether you want to watch whales, explore caves, fish, swim, surf, bush walk, visit wineries, or just relax and do nothing, it's all possible while holidaying in Augusta.
We are definitely going back to Augusta!
A small timber town, Dwellingup (95km south of Perth) is surrounded by state forest and water catchment area. It was almost totally destroyed by a bushfire in 1961. Many other smaller towns in the area were destroyed, and Dwellingup was the only town to be rebuilt. It is approximately 10kms from Dwellingup to an area of the Murray River where there are camping grounds and picnic areas. The Dwellingup Station is the main centre for the Hotham Valley Tourist Railway. The History and Visitors Information Centre in town is very interesting and worth a visit.
