The last weekend in March, we went to Harrietville, about a 4 hour drive from Melbourne. From here we took an overnight hike into the Victorian Alps to Mount Feathertop, easily the most beautiful Mountain area we've had the pleasure of seeing. The drive was longer than we'd thought (Lonely Planet said it was 160 km from Melbourne....NOT!), and we were irritable and fighting with each other on the way there, the next morning, and the first day of the hike. We'd chosen to go the opposite way that most people go, and ended up hiking up the steep NorthWest Spur. As it turned out, our efforts were worth it. The view at the Melbourne University Mountain Club Hut was incredible, and we had the whole geodesic dome hut to ourselves for the sunset and a candlelight dinner! We were blessed with a beautiful sunset, which melted our irritations and frustrations away. But next time we'll go the long, and less steep way of the Bungalow Spur--it'd take less time and certainly less effort!
Along the way up the North West Spur, we saw this cool lizard....still not sure of its Genus or Species...will have to check that out!
Further along the way, we took a water break at a nice cold stream...
After hiking about 4 hours uphill, we saw this sign which read "Steep Descent." We thought our worries were over, but we were wrong! There was still about 4 more hours worth of hiking (mostly uphill) to do! Bugga!
Here, Mike stops for a rest. He'd just about decided to give up and pitch a tent right here on the wooded slope! He was carrying >60 pounds, including a bottle of wine and a bottle of chocolate liquer! We got a little ambitious after Tasmania, I guess... |
