We hiked from Pyleon Gap to Kia Ora Hut,
through more forests, this time with more ferns and other rainforesty plants. Again we
were blessed with speckled sunlight throughout our day... At left is a photo of Mom on the rocky trail through the forest, and
at right is one of Chris and Mike in the same area. |

We hiked ~ 7 kilometers to Kiora Hut, where we stopped
for lunch admiring this view as we ate. |
|
|
Then we hiked another 11 km, and all of us dropped our
packs and took a side track to view Fergussion and D'Alton Falls, two large waterfalls
that our trail book told us not to miss! Pictured here, Chris waits, while Mom carefull
chooses her footing across a natural bridge. |

And here is a photo of Mike and I at Fergusson Falls.
Unfortunately, it doesn't capture the powerful falls in the background, but it's pretty
nonetheless. |

We continued another few kilometers to Hartnett Falls, a secluded
place where we set up camp at the top of an enormous waterfall. Here we had a welcome
rest. We waded about warm smooth rocks between which were clear pools of chilly water. I
wasn't yet dirty enough to freeze my tail off in the water, but I gladly reclined on the
warm surface of the dark rocks. I believe Mike was the only one who attempted a frigid
sponge bath! |
