Historical Context: During the Civil War, each state took their own position as a Union or Confederate State. Although none of the military battles took place in New York, a Union state, New Yorkers reacted in their own way to the many phases of this conflict.
Task: Using information from the documents and your knowledge of social studies, answer the questions that follow each document for Part A. Your answers to the questions will help you write the Part B essay in which you will be asked to:
- Identify and discuss two differing viewpoints New Yorkers held about New York´s involvement in the Civil War.
- Discuss how women in New York might have played a role in the war.
- Discuss the role that New York African Americans played.
Be sure to include specific historical details. You must also include additional information from your knowledge of social studies.
