The Colors of Cherokee




NorthernLights of Alaska, winter of 1990. Photo taken by Dayna Wescott in Wasilla, Alaska. At 3:00 a.m. in three feet of snow at a below freezing temperature. The sky looked as if it were on fire. Truly awesome.



The color RED, according to The Cherokee Tribe, represents SPRING, the direction EAST and AIR, the Cherokee word for SPRING is "gi-la-go-ge" and RED is "gi-ga-ge"



The color BLACK according to The Cherokee Tribe represents AUTUMN, the direction WEST and WATER, the Cherokee word for AUTUMN is "u-la-go-hv-s-di" and BLACK is "gu-ni-ge"



The color BLUE according to The Cherokee Tribe represents WINTER, the direction NORTH and EARTH, the Cherokee word for AUTUMN is "go-la" and BLUE is "sa-go-ne-ge"



The color WHITE according to The Cherokee Tribe represents SUMMER, the direction SOUTH and FIRE, the Cherokee word for SUMMER is "go-ga" and WHITE is "u-ne-ga"



The Cherokee word for GREEN, is "i-tse-i-yu-s-de"



The Cherokee word for PURPLE, is "gi-ga-ge-i-yu-s-di"
