Would you like to see the "Russian Riviera?" Experience Greek, Byzantine, Turkish, and Italian architecture among high cliffs and deep caves? Perhaps nowhere on earth is there more history set in such a dramatic locale!
In 1783 Crimea came under Russian control, and Yalta
became the Empire's premiere Black Sea resort when tsar Alexander the II
made nearby Livadia a summer residence. Before the revolution the coast was peppered with aristocratic estates,
and artistic figures as Tolstoy, Chekhov, Rahmaninoff, and Shalyapin spent
much time here. Since then, Crimea is called "Russian Riviera".
Russian Czar Nicholas II built a palace outside Yalta that later became the
site of one of the critical meetings of the last century -- the 1945 gathering
of Franklin Roosevelt, Winston Churchill and Josef Stalin that partitioned
Europe.
The Crimean Peninsula is a golden prize, that has always been difficult to control. A land Bridge merging East and West, it was fought over for hundreds of years by numerous nations. But it was Russia that eventually wielded the firmest fist. In 1954 Khrushev transferred legislative control of the Crimea to Ukraine. Today, although officially a part of Ukraine the language you will hear is Russian.
Visit 2000 year-old Ancient Greek Towns... or tour Turkish Mosques and Byzantine Fortifications. Enjoy wandering through Medieval Italian Fortresses and Russian Palaces. All these attractions are only a stones throw from the sapphire-blue waters and lovely beaches of the Black Sea.
This is a beautiful place, called the Crimea, combining historic attractions and sub-tropical vistas.
