Three
ranges of mountains run parallel with the southern and eastern
coasts, culminating in Roman Kosh, a peak which rises 5,060
feet above the sea level, and is surrounded by other peaks
between 3000 and 4000 feet in height. The abrupt Southern
slopes are very picturesque, gaining the attention of rock
climbers from around the world.
The southern coast is very popular tourist area due to its
beauty. The cliffs rise abruptly from the water to the height
of 2000, 3000, and even 4000 feet, and are crowned with
dream-like domes, pyramids, and spires of rock.
The northern slopes are not very steep, gently rising to the
plateau.
Although
the peaks will be covered with snow in mid-winter, the
sub-tropical, dry climate does not posses the biting cold
associated normally with winter and snow. Snow is rare for the
southern coast of the Crimea, although the mountain tops are
snow covered during December until the beginning of
April.
Hiking and snow skiing during these months is very
enjoyable.
The mountains of the Crimea are covered with dense forest and
wild flowers here grow more abundantly than in any other part
of Europe.
Spring brings forth nature at its best. Wild flowers and trees
begin to bloom and shower the country side with an
unbelievable beauty that is breathtaking.
The woods and meadows are carpeted with many beautiful
varieties, of which some are found no where else in the world
except the Crimean mountains. It is abundant with wildlife,
and is home to reindeer, wild boar, mountain goats, rabbits
and foxes.
