We went to Chiapas, a montainous region in the South East of Mexico

[Image] The main square in the town of San Cristobal de las Casas.
[Image] The Santo Domingo church in San Cristobal. It was built in the 16th century but the baroque facade was added in the 17th century.
[Image] We went on a walking tour of some Mayan villages. This is a cemetary and the shell of an old church on the outskirts of the village of San Juan Chamula.
[Image] The plaza in San Juan Chamula, our group having lunch and, in the background, local men wearing traditional hats.
[Image] This woman was weaving colourful placemats on a backstrap loom.
[Image] We stayed at the delightful Nabolom Hotel, the old home of the Blooms, an anthropologist and a photographer who did a lot of work in the Yucatan. That is the courtyard.
[Image] I liked the pottery in the shape of a bird, it is a popular design.
[Image] We rode on a local bus all morning and then got on this motorized canoe to go to our jungle lodge.
[Image] We spent 3 days in the jungle near the Guatemala border at Ixcan Station. Naturalists study there and some of them took us on nature walks.
[Image] We went for a boat ride at dawn in the fog.
[Image] View of the river at Chakmul where we waited for the bus to take us to Palenque.
[Image] The little-known ruins of Tenam Puente near Comitan (Chiapas).
[Image] This woman was cooking food and selling pop in a park.
[Image] The beautiful archeological site of Palenque. On the left is the Temple of Inscription, in the middle, the ruins of the Palace.
[Image] The Temple of Inscriptions, Palenque.
[Image] The Temple of the Sun at Palenque. Only a few of the buildings have been excavated, the rest is still covered by the jungle.

We flew from the town of Palenque to Merida to visit the Yucatan

[Image] The cathedral in Merida is plain-looking.
[Image] Chichen Itza - this is the back side of the Palace, it hasn't been reconstructed.
[Image] The Palace in the background, the mortuary platform in the foreground.
[Image] El Caracol or Observatory.
[Image] This building is called the Annex (Chichen Itza). It is built in a pure Mayan style.
[Image] Detail of a wall in Uxmal: masks of Chaac, the rain god.
[Image] A street scene in the town of Playa del Carmen, on the Carribean sea.
[Image] Windy morning on the beach.
[Image] The beach was very quiet in the morning.

I have kept my comments to a minimum because there are many excellent web sites and guide books on travelling and on the different regions of Mexico.
