Today, with the developments in advanced communications technology, two persons thousands of miles apart can get in touch instantly via email, fax, or telephone. As a result, actual handwritten correspondence has become a time-consuming luxury. Such change has made hand-painted postcards (already unique items) into truly precious historical relics, especially for the Japanese who have always placed great value on the preservation of their cultural heritage.
Through concentrated efforts to collect these postcards by all possible means, Mr. Dean T. Chou, president of the Rainbow Sign Publishing Company, has gathered hundreds of hand-painted postcards created during the Japanese period of occupation in Taiwan (1895-1945). Each of these cards is worthy of careful study, offering insight into a bygone era.

Larger Than Life: The American Tall-Tale Postcard, 1905-1915, Abbeville Press Publishers, New York, (1990) 1st ed, B&W illustrations, 132pp. Exaggeration to prove a point has long been a key element in America's visual and storytelling heritage, and in most rural parts the "liars' bench" was a common fixture outside the courthouse or general store. Humorously capturing many facets of life in turn-of-the-century small-town America, the tall-tale postcard vividly bears witness to a challenging era of inventiveness and creativity in coping with life's vicissitudes.
