Tiger Facts

First and foremost know the following facts about tigers :
  • Tiger is a thorough gentleman.
  • Tiger is not a blood thirsty killer.
  • Kills only for food and only when hungry.
  • Not a man-eater by habit but on rare occasions turns into a man-eater due to inability to hunt.
  • The first human kill is almost always by accident. He kills efficiently.
  • A healthy tiger may attack a human if he feels threatened and there is no room to escape.

Tiger medicine is a big hoax and has no curative powers nor is it an aphrodisiac (viagra is 1000 times better). Those consuming tiger parts for whatever reason please stop if you want to see the tiger through the next century. Discourage others forcefully by words.

If tiger dies we are soon to become extinct, for tiger is an apex species, indicator of the health of the forests (ecosystem) our green lungs which give us fresh air and maintain our climate - otherwise we may as well be extinct.

How tigers are poached: poisoning their kill (very common now), shooting, snaring (rare).

Who poaches: Unhappy villagers (rare), local hunter (common) for small sum given by the middle man. The end user outside buys for a large sum and sells products for huge profits. (Use modern medicine it works tiger parts don't)

Tiger is a nocturnal animal and can be seen with luck in parks like Kanha and Bandhavgarh. Tigers need healthy forests and shy away from man. Because of forest degradation and poaching the tiger is losing ground.

As prey becomes less it is forced to kill cattle and the man animal conflict begins. Habitat Destruction is the major cause of tiger's plight in India.
Tiger/Barasingha/Bisons etc. needs undisturbed forest to breed and it is necessary to give them a forest free of human presence. At least the core of forests should remain free of human habitation and live stock.

Epidemics/diseases/injuries are taking a toll of tiger animal and other endangered animals.

Tiger statistics

  • Before 1900 around 80,000 to 100,000 tigers in India.

  • Before independence 1947 around 40,000 tigers.

  • Around 1971 when Project Tiger started 1700 to 1800. Project Tiger brought populations to 3000 to 3500. Unfortunately the tiger population today stands to 1500 - 2000 thanks to poaching for it's bones

Till China/South East Asia ran out of tigers and tiger medicine Mfrs. started looking towards Indian Tigers.
Till population pressure, poverty, and disinterest in tiger conservation from the high offices took its toll.

As forests in India started shrinking rapidly.
Today around 2500 barely eek a living in 3-4% percent of severely threatened area of India. This 3-4% area is now being looked at for human subsistence/greed, 96 % area is not enough.
FUTURE:- Bleak. Tiger may survive in National parks like Kanha, Satpura, Corbett and Sunderbans for some more time till inbreeding and other factors take their final toll.

Confession I am an amateur naturalist who has roamed the tiger habitats of my region in Central India namely: Jabalpur, Kanha, Bandhavgarh, Pench, Pachmarhi, Achanakmar etc. I am not a tiger expert or a researcher. As a nature lover I have learned about tigers and tiger habitats. I am interested in a general study of nature birds, mammals, and flora and butterflies etc. I am also interested in nature photography(amateur)and do act as a nature guide too and make travel arrangements. I write articles on travel on internet and am looking forward to publishing more articles on Indian wildlife. My articles on Nesting Sun birds & Paradise Flycatchers have been published in Sanctuary Asia
