What a Girl Wants
It may just be that I have father/daughter issues, but I enjoyed What a Girl Wants. Even though it was as predictable as an atomic clock, it still managed to make me cry at the resolution of the film. Perhaps this emotional reflex is something akin to when my husband laughs at Three Stooges gags when he already knows what’s going to happen.
No thick, complicated plot here, but plenty of feel good, warm and fuzzy fun. The grandmother provided comedic relief as well as wisdom and understanding. She is how I want to be when I grow up. One particular line from the grandmother to the main character, Daphne, is, “No hugs, dear. I’m British; we only show affection to dogs and horses.”
The first plot point comes at about 20 minutes in when daughter and father bump into each other for the first time. And the second plot point comes at about 75 minutes when the evil-soon-to-be-stepmother locks Daphne in another room so her own daughter can dance the Father/Daughter dance—something Daphne has wanted to do all her life.
Yes, so simple minds are entertained easily. That’d be me. Although I’ll probably not watch it again, I would recommend the movie to someone with a couple of hours to kill when it’s shown on cable.
