Mrs. Rideaux's HOMEPAGE

ESL
HOHENFELS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

The English as a Second Language (ESL) program is designed to develop students' listening, speaking, reading, and writing proficiency, so that their performance is equivalent to that of their comparable English-speaking peers before they exit the program.

Students are considered for the program when their first language is something other than English or when another language is spoken in the home. This information is obtained from the Home/Language Survey sheet during registration.  Students may also be recommended by teachers, parents, or from standardized test scores.

Upon recommendation, the student is given a request to interview/assess permission slip.  The ESL teacher receives the permission slip and then gives the student an assessment using Language Assessment Scales (LAS) testing materials. The Language Assessment Scales (LAS) material assesses the students' oral, reading, writing, and listening proficiency of the English language.

The results of the LAS tests go home accompanied by a request to service, if the student falls within one of the four proficiency levels.  Students at the lowest proficiency level receive listening and oral language development instruction.  Level Two students receive listening, reading, and oral language development instruction.  Level Three students receive listening, reading, writing, and oral language development instruction, while Level Four students concentrates on written proficiency and continues to perfect reading comprehension and the listening and speaking skills.

Materials for developing oral language, listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills are used in the ESL program.  The ESL teacher also supplements the Literacy Place program.  ESL progress reports will accompany the regular report card each grading period.  ESL students are pulled out of their regular classroom and serviced by the ESL teacher for a specific number of hours per day according to their proficiency level needs.  Students must be evaluated before exiting the program.  They are then monitored for a year to track success in the regular classroom.
