Ultima Thule - Handicrafts Center
The handicraft center is managed on a cooperative basis but is administratively and financial supported by municipal authorities. In the building there are facilities for making handicrafts and a shop for showing and selling. The raw materials used for producing are bought from the hunters by the center. Items bought are mostly narwhale tusk, walrus tusk,
polar bear claws, skin from fox, seal and polar bear.
In one half of the center is a workshop with tools for making the artifacts. In the other half of the center is a shop for presenting and selling the products. When an item is finished for selling it is bought by the center. Some products are sold for local use and some are exported down the coast in Greenland or to other countries. Due to international restrictions the export to other countries, except Denmark, is very limited.
Many of the produced figures are based on telling the story of the unique culture by telling a plain and simple story about the everyday event on hunting. The loved and hunted animals as well are portraited again and again.
Much handicraft is produced at home or to pass the time during long hunting tours.
Ornaments made of ivory from narwhale and walrus are especially very desired. They are mostly bracelets and neckles´ and chains with small figures of the hunted animals. Rings and earrings are made in ivory too.If one has special wishes, they can be ordered too.
For sale in the handicraft center are produced a great variety of subjects used in daily life: Harpoon spear-heads and ulo´s (woman´s knife). Whips made of sealskin for dogteam driving. Normally almost any kind of traditional skin clothing can be bought - anoraq´s, polar bear skin trousers, kamiks, headwear and mits. Skinclothes can be ordered and sewn for individual size and fit.
