Places of interest
Enniskillen
Built partly on an island between the Upper and Lower
Lough Erne, the town was once a stronghold of the Maguires.
Their 15th century castle became a barracks in the
18th century, and its Watergate houses county and
regimental museums.
The Portora Royal School was founded in 1608 by James Ist
; past pupils include the writers Oscar Wilde and
Samuel Beckett, and Henry Frances Lyte, who wrote the hymn
'Abide with Me'.
To the south is 18th century Florence Court (NT);
a yew in the grounds is said to be the mother of all Irish
yews.
To the east is Castle Coole
(NT), a mansion of 1789-95.
