Sammey's Story
September 22, 2001
Sammey was the oldest member of
our feline household at the tender age of 71/2 years. She came to live with
me with a couple other cats and when her owner moved to town, she stayed
behind with me where she became the best mouser! She quickly made her way
into my heart when she rescued me from a mouse that had jumped onto my chest
one day. She grabbed that mouse so fast and looked at me with her beautiful
little face as if to say, "are you gonna let me out so I can
really take care of this mouse, Ma"? She trotted the culprit
outside never to be heard or seen again.
She rescued me again one night
when we were outside. We were in back of the house and her attention quickly
became cautious towards the front. My little ball became a fierce lioness as
I quickly turned on the light and 'lo and behold, invading our front yard was
a raccoon twice her size. Off like a lightning bolt she took, which startled
the coon and across the road, through the mammoth ditch, and into the brush
they went. She trotted back about 15 min later, strutting like she'd made the
kill of a lifetime.
Not so long after that, I had to
rescue her. She came home with her eyes swollen shut and oozing. We really
don't know what happened, maybe the 'coon got even or she ran into something,
but she lost her sight in one eye that night. The vet gave her some pretty
girlie pink stitches after repairing what he could. She got the stitches
removed a couple weeks later and resumed her normal mousing activities.
A year later, my sweet Sammey (who never wanted to
be in the house) disappeared. A month later, I had gone into Safe Haven
Humane society (a trip I made about every 4 days to see if she'd been brought
in) looking for her and found Quinn. It was then I decided that she wasn't
coming back. She had a collar on, but we'd recently changed our phone number,
and even if she had been found and someone had tried to call, they wouldn't
have gotten us.
January 15th, 1996. My oldest son Bryan turned 4
years old that day. I was just putting dinner in the oven and got a call.
Sammey had been gone for 2 months. The lady on the other end asked, "Do you
own a white cat named Sammey"? I explained to her that we'd lost her a couple
months ago. She told me that she had a little white cat wearing a collar with
our old phone number on it and hadn't been able to get through, so she looked
in the phone book and tried this number. I was utterly shocked! I asked her
where she was and she gave me directions. She was over 8 miles from home, and
had crossed a four-lane highway to boot!
When we were reunited with her, Sammey ran to me
and chattered to me about how lost I had been. Where had I been and why
hadn't I given her her weekly soft food. It was a VERY happy reunion!!
Five years later, my husband and I bought our
first house and moved here in March. Things were going smoothly for Sammey
and for the first time she was becoming the indoor kitty she never wanted to
be before. Oh, she still wanted out mind you, just not as often as before.
Well, it's now been 5 weeks or so since we last saw our little white ball.
We've missed her terribly and don't know what happened to her. We only hope
that maybe someone will find her and call us again. Her collar has her name
and phone number on it, so there is hope! She's a BIG part of our family and
we hope she comes home to us soon. Not knowing is the toughest part.
We love you Sammey!
