New House - June 2000 - Stairs

Risers
Still looking for things to do as the sheetrock and taping dragged on, Rick tackled the stairs. We have mahogany treads and mahogany finish stringers along the edges of the stairs, but the risers are southern poplar. Martha put minwax cherry stain on them and they matched the mahogany fairly well.

The new 12" DeWalt sliding compound miter saw with a 60 tooth carbide blade did a great job on all the cuts. On the left, Rick is cutting the angle on the finish stringer and sanding it on the right.

The rise on the stairs was 7 3/4 inches and the risers at 8 inches fit into a dado on the bottom of the tread above them. They were screwed into the back of the tread below them from behind. The treads were glued and pulled down to the rough stringer by deck screws heading up from underneath through blocks glued and screwed to the rough stringers. This is the last riser being attached to the last tread and banged into place.

Bottom stairs
The bottom stairs had an extra bit on the first two steps. This is the first thing to be seen as one enters the house, so they were made a bit more dramatic. Number two was longer and came out flush with the front of the entrance coat closet and the bottom step was longer still with a return back to the coat closet wall.

Finished bottom stairs
The finished bottom stairs (14 July). As the picture shows, the rock is not finished and there is no sign of taping.
