New House - June 99 - Footing

Rick and Ed build a footing
Jeff Boucher, the concrete contractor did not show up as planned in early June,
so Rick and Ed built a footer, including this massive section in front
of the wine cellar. It took about a day and a half to construct the footer.
Chad oiling
On the afternoon of the second day,
Chad got to put Martha's used motor oil on the forms.
Note to building inspector: two rows of rebar.
The concrete truck arrives
The concrete truck arrives under Nancy Higby's watchful eye.
Pouring continues
The massive front of the wine cellar is filled ...
More pouring
and the truck continued around the perimeter.
Piers are filled
Finally, Rick wheeled concrete to the piers.
Screeding
Rick finishes the screeding.
Chad did all but the last five feet,
but when it is your house, your camera, and your website,
you get the photo op.
Shear connectors
Ed installs the shear connectors every 4 feet
to anchor the wall to the footer.
Driver
Our driver (also named Rick), did a great job.
The all wheel drive, front discharge truck made this
as easy as concrete work can be.
That's still not very easy.
Celebration
The crew celebrates their careful calculation of the required concrete.
Ed, being a true carpenter, only writes on boards.
The calc said 10.6 yards. We ordered 11 and had a wheelbarrow leftover.
Those with good eyes will note a bit of concrete on the bank in the background.
Cleanup
The tools get cleaned up.
Footing
The finished product after backfilling and
with cleats for the walls and the main beams.
