New House - October 2001 - "Final" Photos

Kitchen island buffet
The island was custom-made by The Wood Carte in Glens Falls. We had to stain it and finish it. Rick put an electrical circuit in the floor and a box on the side of the island. The soapstone top came from RMG Stone Products in exchange for a website that Rick made for them. Two stools fit under the overhang for dining in the kitchen, or just kibbitzing the chef.

The buffet and hutch separate the DR from the kitchen. It was also made by The Wood Carte. There are a pair of doors on the back side allowing access to the storage from the kitchen.

couch couches
We ordered two couches from Pottery Barn. They were advertised as available for fast delivery (2 weeks). When we called, they said that that speedy delivery was only in major metropolitan areas. It seems the capital of the third largest state is not a major metropolitan area. Nonetheless, delivery was expected closer to the two weeks than the three months that normal furniture takes. They arrived in Albany in about two weeks but Clark Movers wouldn't schedule them for delivery until 10 days later. On the day of delivery, the truck broke down and they were delivered about 5 days later. Unfortunately, one was slightly damaged. Several phone calls later, Pottery Barn said to leave that there and it would be removed when they sent a replacement. After several more incidents with Clark Movers, the new one arrived, but they said they hadn't been authorized to remove the old one. It is now a wonderful addition to the pool room. The pictures, which look much better without the reflection from the trees, are from Bob Nunnelley.

entertainment center couch
The entertainment center was the third custom-made piece that came from The Wood Carte. This is it being finished in the garage. It was lifted off the back of the pickup truck with blocks and tackles as it is 54 inches high and about 8 feet long. Like the buffet in the kitchen, it separates the two rooms (entry and living room), but allows views from the entry over the furniture in the living room to the three large windows on the west side.

Our IRS rebate check put a stereo system in the left bay. The large TV and VCR went in the center where there is a drawer for tapes. The right side has six drawers for CDs.

dining room

One last look at the dining room table with the fireplace behind it and the buffet separating the dining room from the kitchen. Bittersweet is decorating the table and Louis Martini's Chardonnay is about to accompany some golden beets with late greens and parslied chicken.

patio steps
We had ordered large chunks of rock to use as steps from Can Mea Stone in Granville, and were given a two week delivery time. Every week the delivery slipped about 10 days. I think they would have arrived sooner if work had stopped. This really wouldn't be so bad except that the outside stairs were required for a final inspection and a certificate of occupancy. After Rick finished all of the inside work required, he built some wooden steps and called for the inspection. The house passed, but a water test was needed. The water flunked, so bleach was dumped into the well and pumped around for a while. After 24 hours the well was emptied and a new sample showed no coliform. The CO was in the mail. Eventually, as more inside finish work was completed, Rick started on the patio and after that was in, he picked the biggest, flattest, squarest stones and put in steps.
