New House - October 99 - Wiring

panel
The 200 amp, 30 circuit panel is to the left
and the gentran switchbox is to the right.
Cousin Will arrived in late October and
wired up a few lights as sunset left us with
less working time each night, before the final
indignity of the return to Eastern Standard Time
and a sunset before 5 PM.

A gentran (generator transfer) switchbox was installed
and the minimal lights that we wanted became circuit
number one for the generator. This circuit will power
a few lights on every floor, an outlet near the front door,
and an outlet in the master bedroom. Currently, the front
door outlet powers the table saw. Circuit two on the
generator ran to the kitchen for the refrigerator,
and currently, it powers the chop saw. Circuits three
and four supply 240v to the water pump. Circuit five will
provide some lighting, some receptacles, the propane stove
ignitors, and range hood fan in the kitchen. Circuit six
will power the propane-fired heater fan, ignition, and
power vent and the power vent for the propane-fired water heater.

The gentran switchbox contains switches that choose the
power source for the six circuits. Under normal circumstances,
the switches take power from the main box via the normal
circuit breaker and send it into the circuit. When the power
fails, an emergency generator will supply power to the
gentran box and the switches will be set to take power from
the generator and send it to the six circuits. This prevents
backfeeding the main power system and endangering lineman
as they repair the wires.
