Mushrooms

The summer of 2000 has been the wettest on record. It is getting warm, certainly warm enough for mushrooms. We usually find boletes and a few old men and lobsters (but they need water) and have rarely found the Hedgehogs and never seen Black Trumpets. So far this year two patches of trumpets have been found, amounting to about three pounds. They (and Chanterelles and Boletus Edulis, or cep (French), or porcini (Italian)) are among the best mushrooms. The cutting board is made from the siding from the new house with the interior trim as an edge.

A morning walk through the woods with friends (Carol Guttzeit and Brandon Twine) resulted in a plate of Hedgehogs (Hydnum Rapandum), a Parasol (Lepiota Procera), and more Black Trumpets. The basket of boletes weighed in at 1.5 pounds.
