HIGHLANDS OF THE ANDES

The Ecuadorian segmen of the Andean mountain range rises majestically from the pacific coastine. The range consists of two towering backbones of many beautiful glacier capped volcanoes, the majority over 4000 meters in altitude and several actively emiting gases and ash today.

The valley formed by the two ridges, dubbed the "Avenue of Volcanoes", is a patchwork quilt display of peasant fields of greens and golds. Differing from the other Andean regions, volcanoes like inactive Chimborazo (6310m), the country´s highest volcano and Fuji-shaped Cotopaxi (5980m), the world´s highest active volcano, stand majestically alone providing a spectacular profile agains the deep blue sky
