It's been a little while since we've had a chance to update this page, we have a new addition, his name is Hooch and he's another German Shorthair Pointer. This dog is ALL boy and he's so hyper right now, I thought Jynger was bad when she was a pup, so far Hooch takes the cake. I'll get some pics up in a day or two.
Update: We're dealing with a potential bad situation with Jake. During our vacation we got a call from our neighbor who was watching the dogs letting us know that Jake was limping very badly. Since he's getting older we sort of wrote it off as arthritis and that we would watch him when we got back then take him to the vet if needed. We got home on 9/3/01 and decided that he was still in a lot of pain and got him to the vet the next day. (9/4/01) The dr came in and said that there was noticeable swelling around the wrist (above the paw on Jake, but below the elbow joint) and wanted to take an x-ray to see if there was a fracture or anything. The dr came in after a few minutes and said "we need to talk" and my heart immediately sunk. He believes Jake may have bone cancer-osteosarcoma ... he gave him a shot of some pain medicine and gave us some pills to help with the swelling and if he's still limping and in obvious pain in 1 week we will go back. The dr consulted with a 2nd vet about Jake's x-ray and they were both concerned about the spot, it looks as if a portion of Jake's bone has been hollowed out. We could be dealing with just a cyst but as the dr said it looks awfully suspicious. If he's still not doing well we will take him back to the vet and they will keep him overnite and do a biopsy of the bone and that will take 5 days to get the results. If it's cancer our options are few, they can put him on pain medicines to reduce the pain and inflamation, we can amputate then do chemotherapy, but even that will not lengthen his life, he may have only 6 months left with us. We have an appointment scheduled for Monday (10th) to check his prostate, he's also bleeding from the penis, that started this Friday. Dave and I have been doing a lot of research, there are some holistic meds that can be used for the cancer, we may go that route, I'll keep you updated.
11/17/01 **Update**
We are pleased to report that Jake is doing GREAT. After a few weeks on Rymadyl (arthritis meds for dogs) his pain and inflamation subsided and after his 2nd X-ray it turns out that the spot had all but disappeared. It looks as if he had a bone spur, he had somehow injured his leg while we were gone causing all the trouble. We will have his leg X-rayed again in another 4 months (making it a total of 6 since the trouble started) just to relieve our fears. Even the Dr had tears in his eyes when he told us. All I could think of was that all our prayers had been answered and that we will be able to enjoy Jake for a lot more years to come. As far as I am concerned 9 1/2 is still young! We will be getting him fixed, though, our vet, Dr Amy has a wonderful technique for neutering older dogs, she says that's a big factor in his prostate problems. Looks like Jake will have a painful Christmas! :) .. Hooch will be in pain right along with him, he'll be 8 months old by then, time for him, too!
NEW UPDATE: 11/15/04
After Jakey died it took me about 6 months before my heart would stop breaking every time I saw a new "baby" but one day at our local Pet Supply store I was walking out and a picture caught my eye on the bulletin board, a German Shorthair pointer needing rescued ... Something about this dogs eyes just haunted me and at that moment I knew I had to have her. Dave and I talked about it and the next day I was off to attempt my journey. It took a lot of doing but with a lot of help from the Ohio German Shorthair Rescue Group Cedar became part of our pack Saturday 8/7/04!! She's a beautiful baby and she's attached herself to me like velcro! She is very even-tempered, a complete opposite of Hooch! She reminds us a lot of Jake, she can sit for hours at the front door just watching ... that was Jake's favorite pasttime too, except sleeping! She loves to be outside, loves kids, loves to hike and has even gone on an overnite camping trip with Dave. I'm truly thankful that we were able to rescue her, and in a way, I think she helped to rescue me ...
