How do you like my kite?
Oh that is not a kite but a stingray. Stingray City is known as a great place to come to. About half the visitors that come to Grand Cayman Island will visit this sand bar and feed the stingrays by hand. You do not have to do SCUBA to enjoy this trip. Most of the visitors will see the area while snorkeling or just standing in waste deep water as the stingrays swim around looking for a hand out. The stringrays you see have lived in this area for a long time and are use to the visitors coming and going. You have nothing to fear from the stingrays as they are really very gentle creatures. Most people think of a stringray as a beast that will sting you with a spine in the base of their tail. This is true and false at the same time,. most of the time swimmers come in contact with a stingray the stingray in doing what it does naturally, that is to settle to the bottom, cover itself with sand and wait for a tasty tid-bit to come along for dinner. Swimmers standing in shallow water have a chance of stepping on a small stingray. The stingray will try to get out from under the swimmers foot by whipping its tail out for something to push against, and some of the time it's the swimmers leg/foot that will get in the way. Think about this, a stingray has a barb in its tail that is its natural defense from predators, if he/she loses the barb or it is broken off in some swimmer, who really is not a threat, how will he/she defend themselves from something bigger that wants the stingray for dinner. That would be like you walking through a jungle with a gun and one bullet and shooting at the first thing you saw while the next beast ate you. In the wild a stingray can be approched by a slow moving diver and even touched. If the stingray feels threatened it will usually take flight and run from the diver. I say this as one who has touched stingrays many times on dive trips, not just at Stingray City. Check out other pictures of Stingray City on my Stingray Page
