Land
Philippines is an archipelago, or chain of islands. It consist of more
than 7,000 islands and islets. The 11 largest islands account for more
than 90% of total national land area. The two largest islands, Luzon and
Mindanao, comprise more than 70% of the land area and contain more than
70% of the population. Luzon is the largest island in the northern part
of archipelago, while Mindanao is the major island of the southern part.
Between them are most of the other islands. Palawan islands are set apart
to the west, across the Sulu Sea.
The archipelago includes a number of large predominantly mountainous
islands as well as many tiny coral attols. The nation has the extensive
coastline with good harbors, and has the longest discontinuous coastline
of any nation in the world at 34,600 kilometers. There are more than 60
natural harbors and half of them are extensively used.
People
Philippines is the 14th most populous nation in the world and the third
most populous in Southeast Asia after Indonesia and Vietnam. About 60%
of Philippinos live in rural areas and they work in agriculture helping
to produce rice, corn, sugarcane, and coconut--the country's leading crops.
