Update - Week Ending 6/13/99

Getting into the Routine

Atlas sleeping in cockpit Apollo sleeping under dodger Even for the most unstructured lifestyle, it seems that there always develops a routine. The cats routine is to wake us up at 4:30 am to be fed and to romp around the boat. Our routine is to try and ignore them as long as possible before facing the inevitable. And then they have the nerve to sleep most of the day! We've lived ‘on the hook' now for over two weeks. But life's daily chores go on.

Chesapeake
Bay Maritime Museum We completed our circumnavigation of Kent Island with stops in Queenstown, St. Michaels, Wye River and finally back to the Rhode River where we've stationed our car for the time being. St. Michaels became the point for our first major laundry duty and re-provisioning via dinghy. Whereas before, we could easily stop at the store on our way home from work, getting to a store requires a much more planning and travel time. For example, we went into Queenstown on Sunday afternoon thinking we could pick up some milk and bread. Not only was it a 20 minute dinghy ride one way from where we were anchored, it was also a 10 minute walk into town. On top of that, the only store in town is closed on Sundays! Not that we're complaining or anything like it. It's just one of the trade-offs that we know we would have to make.

Jim sorting mail Our stop at St. Michaels also allowed us to catch up with Marcy and Ed Herring (Joyce's parents) and collect from them two weeks worth of mail. Later, we took Marcy with us sailing up to the Wye River while Ed drove around to meet up for a nice evening picnic.

Our time in the Wye river also permitted an enjoyable evening with Larry and Sue Denton who live on the water. We were amazed at the variety of birds that come to call at the Denton's bird feeders, especially several pairs of goldfinches. They even had rather domesticated ducks that dined on bird seed on the back porch.

This next week we're headed slightly south to the Choptank River for a visit with Joyce's brother Mike and family, as well as Kenny Shimp and his new boat in Oxford. Well the Oriole's have just completed their biggest beating in franchise history, a 22-1 pasting of the Atlanta Braves; sorry Chuck. How about them O's.
