Carcavelos
-Carcavelos is a little village, which is situated 18 km from Lisbon and 8 km from Cascais.
The origin of the name Carcavelos is linked to the Latin word Cárcava, this word means ditch. Carcavelos had lots of ditches surrounding the bridge where the village is now, these ditches protected the villagers from enemy attacks.
Due to the climate of this region there were a lot of cereal and wine productions and therefore Carcavelos had many farms (17 farms). In few years Carcavelos was full of wine productions and some of them became quite famous due to the good quality of their wine.
The English people also influenced very much Carcavelos due to the Cable and Wireless Company. Sometimes they would go to the Market or to the Carcavelos beach. At that time the Portuguese people did not like to go to the beach but with the English people they learnt how good it was to swim in the beach. They also introduced football in Portugal.
Today Carcavelos is a village that is growing and becoming a pleasant place to live with its long beach and the train station which helps take you to Cascais or Lisbon.
