Happenings schedule

 

Carnival days begin officially on the 17th of January when the masks are given the keys of the town form the major. From then, masked dances take place every Saturday: in the Cristal Ballroom of the hotel Kvarner, community houses in the nearby cities of Lovran, Jušići, in the Hotel Marina in Mošćenička Draga, and many other places. On Sundays a masked ball for children in organized in the hotel Kvarner. Following is a list of happenings in the region during carnival:

Saturday, 17th January - carnival opening in front of the hotel Imperial, with official flag raising.

Sunday, 08th February - Children's Corso (parade) through Opatija's main street: happiness for the young and those who feel that way

Saturday, 14th. February - International Carnival day, with its traditional parade through Opatija's streets. Starting from the hotel Ambasador to the beach Slatina, in some 6 hours, some 2000 people march divided in theme groups, musical groups, alegory vehicles and other categories. Not to be forgotten the Zvončari, a tradition of this region.

Nedjelja, 15th. February at 12:00 - Balinjerada - a race of vehicles that have wheels of steel called balinjeras. While achieving amazing speeds, with fantastic vehicle designs, numerous teams try to win in some of the following categories:

and other prizes by category.

Sunday, 15th. February at 14:00 - a parade takes place in Lovran, a nearby town also known for its carnival tradition. One of the best parades with a special feeling.

Saturday, 21st . at 10:00 - official start and beginning of the Carnival Cup in fishing from the shore. Every contestant comes with his own fishing rod and mask...

Saturday, 21th. February - the annual meeting of all the zvončari of the region (refer to the history page for more info on them). Among others, there are zvončari groups from:

  • Žejane
  • Mune
  • Halubje
  • Rukavac
  • Bregi
  • Veli i Mali Brgud
  • Mučići
  • Zvoneće

and many others. If I forgot some, I'll put them on the list as i remember them.

With the local Zvončari, some guests from Slovenija (the Kurenti) and other groups are expected. During a few hours, good time is guaranteed with many colors and sound, food and home made wine.

Sunday, 22th. February, Rijeka - a big carnival parade, with over 100 groups. During the years, this parade has grown in popularity, so in the past fewyears has had international groups from Italy and other countries. By the seashore, called Riječka Riva, spend a full day with thousands of masks and musicians.

Monday and Tuesday, 24th. i 25th. February - Pust (the character that, in tradition, is guilty for everything bad that happened during the previous year) trials and executions are scheduled in every town. Probably the most interesting trial takes place in Mošćenička Draga on the 25th, when a real trial is set up and the Pust is put into a real size rocket and launched... For details, you'll have to come to see and believe it. Trust me, it is worth it.
