The Chocolate Hills are an unique geological formation in central Bohol. This part of Bohol used to be undersea and these mounds are made of a mineral material that is too alkaline to support most plant life. In the dry season, the hills are brown and barren. Grasses grow on them in the rainy season.
Most of the year, the hills look dark brown and are completely denuded. One American thought they looked like Hershey Kisses, hence, the name Chocolate Hills. We were there after the rainy season when they had grass and looked like lime gumdrops.
.A tourist center has been established on a nearby hill where you have a panoramic view of all the Chocolate Hills. I don't remember how many hundred stairs we climbed to get to the observatory, but, when we finally got to the top, the cool mountain breezes were very nice.
It was a bright, sunny day. We did the Asian tourist thing and took far too many pictures of us standing in front of the Chocolate Hills. Finally we boarded our air-conditioned tourist bus far the hour trip back to the Loboc River for a relaxing lunch drifting down the river.
