The Filipino Neo-Ethnic Rock of ANG GRUPONG PENDONG is the product of Filipino folk musician Alfredo "Pendong" Aban, Jr. A native of Mindanao in Southern Philippines, Pendong has devoted his life to studying traditional Filipino folk music. In this picture he is seen backed by his wife Cynthia Agness "Chat" Aban.
Pendong is the lead singer and rhythm guitarist in his group ANG GRUPONG PENDONG. He also plays a wide variety of indigenous Filipino instruments. Formerly, he had a group that played pure Filipino folk music, but his new group was formed to create a neo-ethnic rock music that could serve as a contemporary vehicle to help more Filipinos get in touch with their musical roots.
Chat does all the female vocals and plays the kulintang, a traditional gong-like instrument. When not playing music, she is a school teacher with a passion for helping impoverished children get an education.
Lito Crisostomo is the lead guitarist. Much of ANG GRUPONG PENDONG's rocked-out high energy may be attributed to his innovative guitar playing. He also joins in on vocals.
Jovi Abella keeps things thumpin' with his driving bass guitar. He is also one of ANG GRUPONG PENDONG's vocalists.
An unseen but powerful presence is Rey Abella on keyboard. Playing his keyboard off-stage in the shadows, his electronic musings are the very soul of several ANG GRUPONG PENDONG songs.
