Teaching Overseas
So, You want to teach Overseas?
There are tons of oppurtunities for teachers to travel the world. I was amazed when I started to get into this and found just some of them. There are several different ways to get into overseas teaching. These are the resources I found in my search to get overseas.
- American Schools
- Department of Defense Schools
There are many schools in different countries for ex-pats and their families. The best way to get jobs here is to go to job fairs and interview with the directors of the schools. Most of the schools require that you have at least 2 years experience. There are a number of organiztions that hold fairs all over the country. The organiztions that I have dealt with are:
- International Schools Services They are the largest of the overseas organiztions, which means plenty of schools to choose from but the fairs can get a lttle chaotic since they are so large. There are usually about 500-700 candidates at the fair. They are a great starting point for any type of research into overseas schools, though.
- Association of Anerican Schools in South America This is a much smaller organization and is good only if you want to concentrate only on schools in South America. But, for that they are excellent. The fairs are much smaller than the ISS fairs, (about 125-150 candidates) so the atmosphere is alot less tense.
- Search Associates This is an offshoot of ISS. It's not quite as large as ISS, but with alot of the same problems. They were very nice and pretty dedicated to finding a you a job, though.
The United States operates many schools on bases around the world for the children of soldiers stationed there. They offer a great compensation package including a good salary, housing, shipment of goods and flights home. The drawbacks include not really having a choice in where you get placed and having to deal with the beauracracy of the U.S. Government. The application is a long involved thing (would you expect anything less from the government?) and they do require that you take the National Teachers Exam.
