May 27, 1703
The history of St.Petersburg began on 27 May 1703 when czar Peter the Great laid the Peter and Paul Fortress on the Zajachii (Hare) island in the delta of the Neva-river during North War against Sweden. We celebrate this date now as the Foundation Day of St.Petersburg. 

May 29, 1703
In the fortress was laid the Sts' Peter and Paul church. It was wooden church at first. The city was named St.Petersburg.

Construction of stone the Peter and Paul Cathedral began in 1712. But only in 1756 the cathedral received its contemporary view. The spire is 122,5 meter high. There is a golden angel on the top. This angel is one of the main city symbols.

Founded first industrial enterprise - The Admiralty Shipyard.

Signed peace treaty with Sweden.

Peter the Great died.

The beginning of construction of Winter Palace.

The Hermitage was founded.

The "Decembrists" rebellion

The greatest Russian poet Alexander Pushkin lost his duel

The execution of Petrashevsky secret society members. At the last moment death sentence to all 21 members including Dostoevsky was replaced to hard labour.

Exactly on the place where the emperor Alexander II was killed founded Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ. (The Church on the Spilled Blood)

1902
Opened the Politechnical Institute
(Now St.Petersburg State Technical University - my lovely alma mater)

World War I. St.Petersburg was renamed to Petrograd.

1917
Revolution

After Lenin's death Petrograd was renamed to Leningrad.

July 18, 1941
World War II. First Nazi airbombing

September 8, 1941
Beginning of 900-day long Siege of Leningrad. Nazi troops fully isolated defenders of Leningrad from the main forces.The most tragic moment in the city's history. Hundreds of thousands people died from starvation. The Population of the city in 1941 was 3 398 thousand people, in 1944 only 600 thousand.

January 18, 1943
The ring of German armies broken.

January 27, 1944
Complete deliverance from the blockade.

1960
Opened War Victims monument on the Piskarevsky cemetery

1991
City received back the historical name St.Petersburg. First democratic election of city mayor (Anatoly Sobchak).

1994
St.Petersburg hosted the Third Goodwill Games 1994.

1996
Mayor title renamed to Governor. Alexander Yakovlev won the second election of the head of the city.

July 17, 1998
Last Russian Emperor Nicolas II, his family and group of servants buried in the Sts' Peter&Paul Cathedral.

2000
First elected mayor of St.Petersburg Anatoly Sobchak died
