Home of DHR19B/778. Currently not operable due to cracked plate in firebox. We did operate it for two years -- 1987 and 1988. Didn't quite reach 100 years as an operating locomotive, but there's still hope it will run again. The ONLY Class B known to have
left the Indian continent.

Thanks for all the valuable information and photos on this 'small wonder', the DHR train.
It was disheartening to hear that the authorities were going to introduce diesel trains. Nontheless, having already known what has happened to the narrow gauge trains in Sri Lanka, I would say that it is typical to this part of the world. In the '70s they
cut short more than half of that scenic 'Kelani Valley' line. Again in the '90s they started broad-gauging the remainder which is complete now. When doing all these operations, they kept a rail in the middle making provision for running narrow gauge train
as and when required. But the narrow gauge trains in Sri Lanka were never seen or heard of again. The little locos and compartments must surely be rusting in one of the many yards here. All this despite the fact that the politicians inaugurating the broa
-gauging project boasted that this was going to be the first line in the whole of Asia that would simultaneously run two types of trains.
Keeping all this in mind, I pray that a similar fate would not befall this wonderful train, at least now it has become a 'World Heritage Site'.
Thanks.

I cannot thank you enough for the great story on the DHR, the "Toy Train" of my old hometown, Darjeeling, which I left some 35 years ago. Now I'm in Kathmandu, but visit Darjeeling once in a while. However, in my hurried visits, I didn't know much about t
e developments in the DHR until I read the stories and saw the photographs in the website. Thank you again for the nostalgia and its continuing history.
My partial knowledge of the story of UNESCO's recognition and other bodies' lobbying and support of DHR as a World Heritage Railway is also through the efforts of Prof. Mahendra P. Lama, a native Darjeelingan who has been a Professorr at Jawaharlal Univer
ity in New Delhi for the last 20 plus years. Perhaps you should have his side of the story also, especially in the context of the attitude of the then Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council while Prof. Lama lobbied for the status of the DHR with the Council.
Thank you once again!

Great web site you've built. I've just got back from Darjeeling and have put together a web site about the DHR with some news and loads of pics of steam trains and Calcutta trams. For those steam lovers out there you'll be interested to know that in the 4
days I was in Darjeeling the new diesel failed 2 days and derailed the day they finally got it running. In the mean time the trusty little tank engines kept the show on the road. Great railway. I can't wait to go back.

I travelled the Darjeeling-railway on July 29th (up) and July 30th (down). Although there was quite some monsoon rain there where two services running: The 3D (09.00 New Jailpaiguri, 17.15 Darjeeling), the 2D (09.10 Darjeeling, 17.30 New Jalpaiguri), the
D (Kurseong-Darjeeling) and the 8D (Darjeeling - Kurseong) were running both days with all the services being about 30 minutes late on the 29th and all of them being quite on time on the 30th.
The 2D+3D are diesel-hauled (engine 604 hauling the 3D on the 29th and returning with the 2D on the next day, engine 603 doing the opposite way) now, though the stock for the 3D was taken into New Jalpaiguri station by steam-engine 802 - may this engine h
ules the early-morning New Jailpaiguri-Siliguri-service, which I have no record of. The 8D/9D trains were worked by the steam-loco 780 "Green Hills" on both days.
The 1D and 4D services are definitely cancelled for the moment, the timetables at the stations en route give various different timings though they all show a train leaving New Jalpaiguri around 09.00 as well as a down train leaving Darjeeling at about the
same time. The 8D/9D service is not always given and if it is the timings vary quite a lot: As I noticed it starts of at Kurseong around 07.00 and returns leaving Darjeeling around 15.00.
Just let me say that I had a really great time on this most lovely railway.
Regards
Edgar

I was born and brought up in Darjeeling. I came across your page mainly because it gave some technical details regarding the DHRS engines.
By the way, does anyone have any info regarding an extension of this line into the Teesta valley?
(Lohapul on the kalimpong/gangtok road).
Another point: In Darjeeling town, the track extended beyond the station to the godown known as "Malgoodam", where there was a ropeway linking Darjeeling to Bijanbari. The track was pulled up sometime in the early 80's.

Excellent site, I think you need to recalculate your estimates of B Tank tractive effort, though tractive effort isn't everything! - Formula for low speeds is very simple. Diesels might be an incentive to move freight to rail from road in long term, but
ew tourists would make journey to DHR to travel behind deisel.

Your page brought back some fond memories of our trips to school (circa 1953-61) (Dow Hill, Kurseong) on the "Toy Train" twice a year in March and November. The idea of switching to diesel is outrageous - part of the pleasure of riding the train is the sm
ll of the steam, the chug, chugging when its trying to climb a hill and finally getting coal in your hair! Please preserve the train the way it is. Nothing can match the uniqueness of the DH Toy Train.

Thanks for the info on Darjeeling.I still maintain that the train to Darjeeling should continue to be steam hauled rather than dieselising.Just like "the palace on wheels" in Rajasthan, this train to Darjeeling should start serving good food, the cost of

Re: diesel power. Why not? This is an endangered railway. Diesel could save it. Re: Ugly/modern DMU. Well, is a matter of opinion. Of course it MUST be modern, an "state of the art" DMU so in years to come we shall speak of "character". Darjeeling is not
"preserved" railway, is a running concern and so needs "point technology" lasting half or one century, and then, others railfans will intend to "save" this "old classic DMU". Please, do not live in past times, look at the future.
By the other way, I am traveling to India next April and will be at New Delhi and Agra from 15th. onwards. Any fan wishing to meet me, please connect via my email: jegm@sinectis.com.ar Thanks.

Thanks for the beautiful photographic and descriptive reminder of this beautiful little railroad. I took to ascent in 1973 and found it beautiful indeed with spectacular views of Kanchenjunga as a reward. My memory is that the trip was a little bumpy an
tiring, and probably represents a truer experience of the beauty but also the practical comfort limitations of past steam travel. Again, a great job! Thanks. Philo Willetts

I was, at four years old, sent from Calcutta by my parents, year 1940, as a boarder to the New School, Darjeeling. My sister Judith, a year older than me was also sent. We started the journey, complete with bedding rolls, from Howrah station accross the r
ver Hooglie from Calcutta. From there, travelled overnight to Siliguri where we had breakfast and transferred to the DHR narrow guage. Lunched at Kurseong waiting for the down train or it waiting for us going up. Arrived in Darjeeling, if there had been n
landslides, in the afternoon. From the station at Darjeeling we took the rest of the jouney on ponies to the New School.
Your DHR page was a wonderfully nostalgic find for me. Keep up the good work.

Good page, visited India in 1987 as a once in a lifetime journey. To my regret I never got to the Darj. But one day maybee. I also was almost up for the railway Magazine Trip a few years back, but never made that either.
Just adore the Loco's still used daily. But the ones that makes my mouth water are the Pacific and the former Streamliner. Can we have some pictures of these on the home page please?

this is a very special train in a very special place - while i think steam is great for attracting tourists - i think the primary goal needs to be preserving and promoting sustainable guideway based systems built to human-scale proportions and with econom
c off the shelf components of all sorts - i think the upgrading of schedules by right of way and alighnment improvements and a sumplimenting of schedules to increase frequence of service with the use of purpose built DMUs built to identical proportions ("
oading gauge") with existing equipment would be a great enhancement to the existing service and make it more appealing to a broader audience. just a thought. rail vehicules of such design are illustrated on my web page...

very happy to see the DHRS website. it is most encouraging to find that a group of enthusiasts has got together to "promote awareness of, interest in, and support for, the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway".
we are now in the final stages of setting up Cedar Inn, a 30-room boutique hotel which offers the finest living and greatest views in Darjeeling, situated as it is on the Jalapahar ridge near the primary wing of St. Paul's School. the hotel will formally
pen its doors to tourists for the season commencing september '99 and we would like to contribute in whatever way we can to the DHRS. for starters, we would like to subscribe to the 'Darjeeling Mail' newsletter - it is very well produced and makes very in
eresting reading. our hotel guests will definitely enjoy the articles and we would like to keep a few copies in our in-house library. if there is any other way in which we at cedar inn can assist the DHRS, please let us know. we await your response. with
ur best wishes,
sincerely

I travelled the DHR in Winter 96/97. It was a wonderful journey, despite the locomotive broke down in Kurseong. We stood in Darjeeling at the Windamere Hotel, a memory of the British Empire and a perfect place to celecbrate New Year's Eve.
It's important that DHR stays alive as a steam railroad, since it is one of the major tourist attractions in North India.

I really enjoyed your site, enlightened me in to the magic railways of the Himalayas.
We have our own two foot gauge railway operating from Port Elizabeth, South Africa to Thornhill with the occasional special operating the full two foot line 170 miles to Avontuur, occasional diesel hauled freight operates there to a load of apples,
gone are the days of the Garratt class operating the full length, the Apple Express is hoping to run a special in March/April 1999 with there restored NG/G16 Garratt, hopefully this year there
will be no let down like this year when it did not run (the special that is)Nice link here

Malaysian trains were once steamed run, also
built by the British.
Steam engine was then out of sight in the early 70's in our country.
It's a wonder to watch the wondrous steam engine once again thru' the programme provided by the National Geographic that causes me to surf the internet to look for more details particularly the one on the Darjeeling site.........
Darjeeling is my dream land for photo, the rail, landscape, and it's people and of course the heritage from the region.
I hope my dream would be realized someday.................

I attended Victoria School from 1939 to 1944 and enjoyed using the Toy Train from Siliguri to Kurseong and back when going to and from school in March and December each year. Also enjoyed using the train when going to Darjeeling to watch our First XI pla
St Pauls and North Point and later to represent VS. Went back later in the late '40's and visited Tiger Hill with a number of Dow Hill and Victoria ex-students who had returned for the annual sports days for both schools.
I enjoyed the nostalgia of viewing the wonderful photographs that brought back some wonderful memories. You have done a wonderful job with this web site.

In 1976-77 I travelled around India on a circular tour ticket. The aim was to ride on and photograph as many steam-hauled narrow-gauge lines as possible. A bonus was of course the large number of steam-hauled broad and metre gauge trains used. The durati

Why not visit my Railway, the Middleton Railway, Leeds (Web page: http://www.personal.leeds.ac.uk/~mph6mrt/mrt.htm). It's "the world's oldest working railway!" established in 1758 by the first Act of Parliament, and ran the first commercially successful
team locos in 1812 (four years before Geo Stephenson!), a rack and pinion engine designed by John Blenkinsop and built by Matthew Murray (who founded the locomotive industry in Leeds).

I came across your page by chance and you have done a great job. I grew up in Kurseong during the turbulent 80's and studied at goethals Memorial School and the Toy train is one of the best memories I have of the place. Thanks for bringing back the memor
es of the good old school days. Thanks a lot! I would be happy to receive e-mails from any interested persons wanting to talk about the Queen of Hills.

As Treasurer of the DHRS, many thanks for putting this up on the website. I've just spoken to Dave Charlesworth, and we should have the first magazine out in the next few days.

Thank you for the photos, I intend to use one of them, and insert my grandson in the photo, just to please him, he dearly loves the "Thomas the Tank Engine" stories.
If you wish I can send you photos of US roads power and equipment, it is easy for me because I work for "Conrail", and thank you again.

I first became interested in the part of the world we now know as India, Pakistan and Afghanistan when as an adolscent I began reading Kipling. I had the opportunity in the 1970s to visit Kabul, Afghanistan, travelling through the Kabul Gorge and Khyber P
ss into Pakistan. I hope I can someday find the money, time and opportunity to visit Darjeeling, preferably by steam train!

Great page, brought back many memories. I grew up in Kurseong, in the 60's/70's. My school (GMS) had a 'siding' nearby, some of the trains to Darjeeling used to stop for a while before going on to Tung. Have many memories of walking on those tracks, and r
nning on Hill Cart Road to catch the running train...of putting coins on the tracks and watching the train flatten them....
Anyone want to share memories, write me; thanks, Amitava

Used to take this train to Mt Hermon school 1946-48. Brought back a lot of memories of shooting at monkeys from train with slingshot-however monkeys caught up with the train and pelted us in return. Great page, great memories. Thanks!

I grew up in Darjeeling and the area during the
40s & 50s, and my parents boarding house was
just 5min. from the station, we used to jump on
and off the train coming and going to Ghoom.
For me its always the Queen of the Hills.

Enjoyed seeing some of the pictures. For some reason, perhaps because all pictures are being received simultaneously, seems to take forever to view. You may wish to consider modifying so that one picture is completed before next starts. Your pictures remi
d me that it is time to ride the toy train again - last and only ride was in 1967! Best regards,
Ranjit Ghosh,
