2000 - 2001 Band Glossary

Before you become immersed into the Silver Regiment Bond Program, you will see and hear many acronyms and terms. Below is an attempt to define those acronyms and terms for you.

Auxilary >> The Color Guard unit of the Silver Regiment

BOA >> Bands of America - A regional marching band competition that is held annually.  This year the southeast regional will be held at the Citrus Bowl on October 3.  Many high schools from all over the southeastern United States send their bands to compete in many categories.  To finish in the top 10 is a great achievement for any Band Program.   The Silver Regiment placed 9th 2 years ago, and 11th last year.  There is also a national BOA which any band may attend.

DCI >>   Drum Corps International  -  A non profit youth organization servicing the world's junior drum and bugle corps and related activities.  Its staff develops band clinics and showcases the top corps in North America in the annual Summer Music games tour.  In the past, Finals were held here in Orlando.

FBA >> Florida Bandmasters Association - An association dedicated to producing and adjudicating solo and ensemble as well as marching and concert band festivals (District and State) in the state of Florida. Performers are rated according to the following system: POOR - Very poor performance, considerable improvement is required in almost every phase; FAI:R - Well below average with much more for improvement; GOOD - Still a good performance but with noticeable weakness in various phases; EXCELLENT - An excellent performance in most respects, bat lacking in finish and perfection in detail to make it superior; SUPERIOR -The best possible performance, practically flawless in detail. Band ratings are awarded based on PLAYING, MARCHING, and GENERAL EFFECT.

Plume >> The Feathery appendage that adorns the top of the marching uniform hat.

Premier Show >> The annual Band Camp Finale. Parents and friends of The Silver Regiment gather together on the evening of the last day of Band Camp to hear and view the first public showing of The Silver Regiment's field show for the upcoming season, Here, The Silver Regiment spirit truly manifests itself in a family setting

Slide Show >> Highlights of the past year compiled by the Silver Regiment Historian that are shown at the annual Band Awards Banquet.

Solo & Ensemble >> FBA sponsored events where individual and small music groups (duos, trios, quartets, etc.), plus Jazz Band are adjudicated and critiqued.

Tri-State >> An annual musical festival at FSU where band students from Florida, Alabama and Georgia participate.  Each year the band director picks three students to attend from his/her school.

Tug >> "Thumbs Up Guys" One of the official logos and endearing mascot of the Silver Regiment.  TUG originated from the 70s phrase used to commend the Band After an outstanding performance.  TUG has ever since been the signal for a job well done by the Silver Regiment.  As such, TUG holds a special meaning for all Silver Regiment members; past, present and future.

Weapons >> The props used by the Silver Regiment Auxiliary Color Guard, includes Rifles and Sabers.

You, as a Band member, make this happen. In order to consistently achieve and maintain the high standard of excellence desired by our Band, please familiarize yourself with the following regulations and cedures of the Band Program.

Through the enriching exposure to and the gaining of knowledge, music in Lake Howell's Band Program, you will be given the opportunity to reach higher levels of self-esteem, responsibility, devotion, consistency and teamwork. All of these combine to motivate and better prepare you for the business of life.

TOP

Responsibilities

In order for a Band member to perform with the Silver Regiment, the Band member must be present at all rehearsals in preparation for that particular performance.  (Example: to perform at a football game or band competition, the Band member would have to be present at all rehearsals that week).

Exceptions may be made at the Director's discretion based on the reason for absence and the number of occurrences.   Doctor and dentist appointments should be scheduled around rehearsals whenever possible.  Again, these absences will be excused with proper notice but the Band member is not guaranteed a right to perform at the next performance.

NEW!! The Alternate Section, unless pre-arranged with the Band Director, any Silver Regiment member who does not report for band camp will be placed in the Alternate Section.  Those members placed in this section will not be eligible to perform in Competitions or FBA.  They will take part in the Half-Time shows and other Marching Events.  Members of this section can earn and will be given the opportunity to "try out" for those positions of an absent Silver Regiment members.

If a Band member misses a major performance. the Band member is not guaranteed a right to future Band membership. This is at the Band Director's discretion. If a student drops out of the Lake Howell Silver Regiment before the completion of a school year and does not fulfill his/her commitment to the Band Program, under no circumstances will the student be allowed to return to the Program at any time in the future.

Financial Obligations

All Band members are responsible for Band assessments in a "fair share" manner. To help defray the costs of the Band Program, a Band Student Assessment has been established for the 1999-2000 school year in the amount of $140 per Band Student. Members of the Auxiliary (Color guard) will have en assessment that is above the $140 Bend Student Assessment. This additional amount (approximately $100 per member) is required for the purchase of costumes and props to match the theme of the Field Show. The recommended Band assessment payment schedule for 1999 is as follows:

$50 ($100 Aux.) due on July 18th --Band Camp Registration
$50 ($50 Aux) due on or before August 31st
$40 ($50 Aux) due on or before September 30th
$ 0 ($40 Aux) due on or before October 31st
$ 140 ($240 Aux) TOTAL * Band Student Assessment

*Please note that there may be additional assessments for other expenses such as competitions.  Additionally, individual spending money may be needed for personal expenses at these venues. Parents attending these events as spectators may need parking and admission expenses.

Please be aware that the BPA is willing to work out a mutually agreeable payment schedule with any family that may need to do so.  Please  contact any BPA Board Officer or the Band Director to work out the details.

Fund-Raising Opportunities

There are numerous fund-raising opportunities so that all Band members and/or parents can raise money to help defray Bond assessments. The Silver Regiment has a "profit-sharing" policy. Each student and/or parent that works at selected Silver Regiment sponsored fund-raising events will be entitled to a percentage share of the total net profit garnered from that event. Details will be forthcoming prior to each designated event.

The Uniform Committee will issue uniforms to the Band members and will be responsible for their storage. Complete uniforms will be worn at all times in public unless other arrangements have been made by the Band Director. Because pride is taken in the Band's appearance, there are distinct guidelines for the way the uniform is worn. Uniform inspections will take place prior to each performance. If the uniform does not pass inspection, the Bond member will not be allowed to perform. The following guidelines apply:

This include Auxiliary equipment. There will be no loitering in the equipment areas. Equipment inspections will occur prior to performances by the Section Leaders and overseen by the Drum Major(s). Extreme care should be taken in handling all Band equipment.

TOP

Music

Most band members will share a folder with another member. Concert music may be taken home on an alternating basis. However, the music MUST be returned to the Band Room at least 10 minutes prior to the start of classes. :If absent for whatever reason, arrangements should be made to return the music to school regardless. Never touch anyone else's folder without permission from the Band Director. This will help in controlling the accountability of the music.  ALL music will be kept in the appropriate slots.

Solo and ensemble music as well as method books may be obtained from the Librarian. ALL music should be returned in the same condition as when it was checked out. Any lost or damaged music will be paid for by the person who signed it out.

Every folder will have a copy of each piece of music issued to the Band. You are responsible for ALL of the music. Lost music must be paid for at the rate of $0.50 per copy ($2.50 if Concert music). Take the music home. Store music in the Band Room's cabinet only during the day.

Band Camp

Band Camp begins at least two weeks before the opening of school. The dates will vary depending on the start of school. Known as the "toughest time of the year" Band Camp requires hard work and perseverance. However, because of the intensity of our Band Program, we require one to two weeks to develop the marching aspects of our Band performance. Attendance at Band Camp of all Marching Band members is mandatory in order to adequately prepare the field show.

TOP

Football Game Performances

1) Pre-Game

a) The Band will assemble for inspection at the appointed time. Check the blackboard in the Band Room for the time and place. Band members will form ranks immediately upon hearing the Drum Major's command. If you are late for inspection, fail into one side of your Section.

b) The Drum Major(s) and Section Leaders will inspect the Band before departure to the stadium.

c) When dismissed from the inspection block, load the buses promptly or wait for the Drum Major's command to march into the stadium.

d) The Band will march into the stadium for all games. Listen for instructions - every stadium is different. For your safety, spectators should not break ranks or files.

e) Purses should not be carried to the games.

f) All extra equipment, music, etc. should be transported to the stadium by chaperones or alternates.

2) Stadium Seating

a) Each Band member should file to his/her assigned seat as determined by the Drum Major(s) and Director.

b) Once the Band member is in place s/he should remain silent and listen for any special instructions.

c) Hats and gloves should only be removed at the command of the Drum Major(s). Uniforms are to be properly worn at all times.

d) Ranks and files should be kept in alignment. The Band's appearance and behavior while in stadium seats is important to the overall image projected by the Band.

e) Cheers and fanfares must be approved by the Director

f) Band members will be allowed to stand and cheer when the Silverhawks score. However, they should be ready to play the Fight 5ong before and after the conversion.

g) Nor-Bard member's are not permitted within the Band Sections. Please explain this to family and friends.

h) Band members are not permitted to bring refreshments [food and drink) into the stands.

i) A break will usually take place during the third quarter of the game. The earlier the Band returns to the stands after half-time and is properly seated, the earlier the Band will be released to go on its break. Each Band member must be back in place, ready to play, at the end of the third quarter. There is the possibility that breaks may not be able to be taken in some situations. If this occurs, it is usually for the Band's safety and it should be handled maturely and without commotion.

j) With the exception of breaks, Band members are not permitted to leave the Band unless accompanied by a chaperone. For safety, Band members should always stay in groups of two or more.

k) Band member conduct should be professional for the duration of the trip. Individual playing, doodling, or beating of percussion equipment are not permitted. Attention should be directed toward the bands' Major(s) or the Band director when they stand in front of the Band.

I) Audiences vary in their behavior toward the Band. If they prove to be rude, each Band member must exhibit school pride and not respond in kind. Strive to be ladies and gentlemen at all times. Again, how individual Band members react to situations reflects on the entire Silver Regiment.

Half-Time and Post Game

a) Band members should file from the stands in an orderly manner.

b) The Band should move quickly to form the proper line-up and instrumentation (preset formation) behind or to the side of the stadium. The Band will move on command to performance position.

c) While the other band performs, the Silver Regiment should be a good audience. The Silver Regiment is "on stage" at all times and we do not wish to detract from the other bands performance as we would not want them to detract from ours

d) After the half-time performance, all Band members will return to their seats and await instructions from the Major(s).

e) At the end of the game, the Band will sometimes perform several musical selections for the entertainment of the departing crowd.

f) When at an away game, the Band will move to the buses in formation, board the buses, and return to school.

g) Uniforms are to be hung properly and turned in to the Uniform Room. Uniforms will NOT be taken home, unless directed to do so by the Band Director. Auxiliary may take their uniforms home with them after a performance.

h) Put all music, school-owned instruments, and Auxiliary  equipment away properly before leaving. If every Band member does his/her part, it becomes an easy task.

i) BEFORE the game, please make arrangements for a ride home afterwards. Approximate arrival times will be posted, so that parents can be waiting. Chaperone's must stay the last Band member has been safely sent home. Parents please be prompt in arriving for student pickup.

j) Each Silver Regiment Band Member is reminded that s/he is representing the Lake Howell High School Silver Regiment, and him/herself. By conducting yourselves as professionally as possible, it reflects not only upon you, but the entire Silver Regiment.

Band members will receive an itinerary of activities prior to all major trips. Band members are responsible for informing their parents or guardians of this itinerary.

Conduct of Band members in public venues should be subdued and courteous. On overnight trips, Band members may not leave their rooms after the designated curfew assigned by the Band Director.

Facet's of the band program . .

This section of the handbook lists various facets of the Band Program that make up the entire cohesive unit. Membership within each section of the Band requires TOTAL DEDICATION, and INVOLVEMENT in all aspects of performance.

Symphonic Band

The Symphonic Band is open to Band members with previous instruction in wind and percussion instruments. It consists of modern wind instruments and provides instruction in common practice period and twentieth century wind literature and transcription. The Symphonic Band is a class that meets every school day and performs several concerts and festivals each year. Private study is encouraged. One afternoon or evening rehearsal per week is required upon the completion of the Marching Season.

Wind Ensemble

The Wind Ensemble is open to Band members with previous instruction in wind and percussion instruments. It consists of modern wind instruments and provides instruction in common practice period and twentieth century wind literature and transcription. The Wind Ensemble is a class that meets every school day and performs several concerts and festivals each year. Private study is expected. One afternoon or evening rehearsal per week is required upon the completion of the Marching Season. An additional requirement of this course involves performance in the Solo end Ensemble Festival.

Jazz Band

Jazz Band membership is open to any member of the Lake Howell High School Band pending an audition process. Concert performances include seasonal and district/state appearances, plus a weekly practice.

Auxiliary

The Color Guard unit during Marching Season, the Auxiliary provides the visual interpretation of the music performed by the musicians of the Marching Band. The Auxiliary will perform at all Marching Band functions. In the second semester, Color Guard continues as Winter Guard, performing at various festivals and competitions in the central Florida area.

TOP

Chosen Officers . .

The following Officers are chosen by the Band Director after an audition process involving off-campus adjudicators. Besides maintaining a minimum 2.O GPA, these Officers will consistently demonstrate good citizenship and the Director's ideas of a role model Band member. If at any time the Director feels that the Band member is not fulfilling his/her responsibilities, s/he may be suspended or replaced at the Director's discretion. The Lake Howell Band has had some of the finest student leaders in the state, and this year will be no exception.

Drum Major

The Drum Major(s) acts as an assistant to the Band Director in any manner that may be required. During those times when the Band Director is not present, the Drum Major(s) is required to fill in as effectively as possible, from conducting and teaching the music to maintaining order and discipline within the Program. As with all Officers, the position requires complete dedication and loyalty to the Band Program. The Drum Major(s) is the student leader of the Band Program and is expected to treat the position as such.

Section Leaders

Section Leaders are expected to maintain their Marching Band Section' musical and visual responsibilities. They are also responsible to see that their Section has all necessary materials needed for musical and visual education, including all drill charts, completed coordinate books and music. They will also assist the Band Director, staff, and Drum Major(s) in rehearsal settings from a disciplinary and production standpoint. In addition, they are to keep in constant communication with the Drum Major(s) and Band President to deliver the expectations and standards established by the Director. Section Leaders are chosen by the Director and Drum Major(s) based on a written paper, interview, and past year's performance.

Auxiliary Captains

The primary responsibility of the Auxiliary Captain(s) is to assist with rehearsals (choreography and marching techniques), check equipment, and aid the Director and Instructors during class. They, also work closely with the Drum Major(s) and Band President , in an attempt to keep open communication lines. The Captain(s) control their respective Auxiliary units and are responsible for inspection of uniforms before performances. Because they are part of the Band, they maintain good rapport with all Band members.

TOP

Elected Officers

President

The Band President has a great deal of responsibility. In the hierarchy of Officers, the President is second in command, thus is in control in the absence of the Drum Major(s). S/He should aid a Officers and Section Leaders when a Drum Major is not available and control all Officer and Band meetings in cooperation with the Drum Major(s). Because the Drum Major(s) and Director often have little time to explain many of their actions. the President must educate and help the Band understand any complex situations.

Vice President

Next in charge in the absence of the President and Drum Major is the Vice President. The best term that has been used to describe this position is "catch-all." S/He accepts any responsibility not being handled. S/He is expected to assist the Secretary Librarian in the collection and organization of the music. Also, s/he is asked to decorate and maintain the warmth of the Band Room by means of bulletin boards, posters, pictures, trophies, etc. In addition to the aforementioned duties, the Vice President is expected to work with the Band Parents Association Treasurer.

Secretary/Librarian

The two most important qualities for the office of Secretary/ Librarian are organizational skills and plenty of time, since the job requires much after-school work. The Secretary/Librarian's main objectives are to make sure all musicians have their music during the year, file all returned music, provide the Band Director ready access to the music files, stamp all LHHS-owned music, update and maintain music lists, organize flip folders, help with paperwork and basic organization within the office, and keep the library orderly and organized.

Operations

The operations officer(s) has one of the most difficult jobs in the Band. S/He is responsible for all maintenance for the Band. Although the duties may seem minimal, they are quite challenging. The job entails maintaining the Band Room in a clean and orderly fashion, keeping track of all school-owned instruments for inventory and maintenance, assembling a loading crew to move equipment for rehearsals and trips, and of course, assisting any Officer or Section Leader in any time of need.
