In May 1997 I traveled to Italy. It was my first trip outside of the ol' US of A (except for a couple of short trips to Canada) and my first time outside of the English-speaking world (aside from a couple of day trips to NYC ;-) This is a journal, in words and pictures, of that adventure.
I had never really had any desire to travel abroad. The United States seemed to offer endless destinations for my travel adventures. There were numerous cities, National Parks and mega-amusement parks that I wanted to visit. Then fate stepped in and I won the airfare to Italy from WHYY, the local public television station. About the same time, I also discovered "Travels in Europe with Rick Steves" on WHYY and I was hooked. Europe looked like such a wonderful place to visit, I couldn't wait!
Rather than totally embracing Rick's philosophy of independent travel, I decided an escorted tour would be safer. I booked a Globus tour through a travel agent and put my fate in the hands of our tour director, Michelle and bus driver, Piero. It was a wonderful experience and opened my eyes to new possibilities. I can't wait to return. Next time I'll try it Rick's way.
I'll eventually put some thoughts and stories about the adventure in this area, but for now I'm putting together a gallery of my favorite photos. After all, "A picture is worth a thousand words."
Currently only Rome, Tivoli, Ostia Antica, Pisa, San Gimignano, Siena, Verona and Venice have photos, but more will be added soon. Come back often and watch the evolution of my sight...

Special thanks to Michelle, our Globus tour director who added so much fun to the experience.
Also, thanks to WHYY-TV, proof that supporting pubic television has rewards other than the wonderful programing.
