Son's of

There are some notable Fergus(s)ons mentioned in the annuls of history. Here are a few listed in chronological order.

Fergus (c. 300 B.C.), born and lived in Ireland. He was head of one of the four main Irish families, specifically the Dal Riata house. Fergus is said to have been the founder of the Scottish monarchy.

Fergus Mor MacErc (???-501), King of Dal Riata, who brought his kingship from Ireland to Scotland. He is credited with bringing the people known as the Scots across from Ireland to Scotland, landing in Dalriada (Argyll) in the 5th century.

St. Columba of Iona (521-597), bringer of christianity to Scotland and closely associated with the famous 'Stone of Destiny'. Records show him to be a direct descendant of Fergus Mor MacErc.

Patrick Ferguson (1665-???), a labourer who joined Prince Charles Edward Stewart's Jacobites. He is considered the oldest soldier in military history, helping defeat the English at Prestonpans at the age of 80 years.

Adam Ferguson (1724-1816) philosopher and historian born in Tayside. He was a confrere of the world famed philosopher David Hume. His works include Essay on the History of Civil Society (1767) and Principles of Moral and Political Science (1792) and was a colleague and contemporary of David Hume.

Patrick Ferguson (1744-1780), soldier and inventor born in Pitfour, Grampian. In 1776 he invented a breech-loading rifle, firing seven shots a minute. He was killed at the Battle of King's Mountain, South Carolina, USA.

Robert Fergusson (1750-1774), poet and mentor of Robert Burns.

Sir Bernard Ferguson, First Lord of Ballantrae and Governor-general of New Zealand from 1962 to 1967.

Sarah Ferguson, daughter of Major Ronald Ferguson, married for a time to the Queen Elizabeth II's second son, Prince Andrew.
