Project - A Cheap Tiller Tamer Well, if you are like me there is never enough money for all the neat things you would like to add to your boat. On of the things I wanted was a tiller tamer. Now, I had one but it was old and the wing nut to adjust the tension was hard on the fingers and the pulley was getting worn out. So I was looking at a way to repir or replace it when I came across this idea on another sailors website. I can't claim it as my idea but I have adjusted it a little.
Materials required:
- A Jam cleat
- @ 6' of rope
- 2 small bungee cords
This is very simple. You take the rope and put a bowline in either end. You wrap the bungee cords around the cockpit rails in the corner of the cockpit and hook the ends into the loops on the ends of the rope. Now take the rope and pull it snug up along the underside of the tiller. Mark this point and attach the jam cleat with the jam side forward. When you want the tiller to stay put, pull the rope forward and let the jam cleat grab it. When out of use it snaps back out of the way. Play with the tension until you are happy with it then you can splice the loops into the rope. This can be removed and stowed quickly to prevent the rope and bungee from deteriorating in the sun.
