We left Paris on our way back to England. We did have on additional stop to make, though. We stopped at the Canadian War Memorial in Northern France. This was a somber experience for most of us, especially the group of Canadians on our trip. I will never forget the "bumpy" terrain surrounding the monument. We were told that those "bumps" in the grass were caused by bombs exploding. The sheer enormity of the fields surrounding this area and the bunkers caused by the bombs was unbelievable.
Soon we found ourselves back on board the P&O Steamer from Calais, France to Dover, England. The first thing that we did was get a traditional English Breakfast! At last, hot breakfast food! The past 2 weeks were truely an experience, but I really missed a good hot breakfast!
When we got back to London, a group of us decided to try and get Theatre tickets for that evening. We managed to get pretty good seats for RENT, ao we took them. Being from New York City, I often take Broadway Plays for granted. It was great to see a broadway play in another country! I think all of us enjoyed the play. Jamie and I decided that we needed to have one last beer, and we managed to find a pub that was still open. We literally had time for one bitter before we returned to the hotel for our last night on holiday.
As I was drifting off to sleep, I began to reflect on the past 2 weeks and felt a true sense of accomplishment. I had done a whirlwind tour of Europe with a group of people from diverse backgrounds and cultures. I did not realize it at the time, but I would later discover how much I had broadened as a person. Experiencing other cultures and spending a few weeks with people from other cultures is an amazing thing! I think that it should be required of all of us. There are some things that you just can't learn in a book. My advise to anyone who has (or thinks that they may have) the desire to see other countries is simple - just do it! You will not regret it.
It turns out that this WAS a sign of things to come! | |
